Washington Monument to Jefferson's Steps, by Bike as Night Falls

A guided evening ride along the National Mall and around the Tidal Basin, getting off the bike at Lincoln, FDR and Jefferson.

Unlimited Biking runs this three-hour ride from its shop at 701 D Street NW, stopping first at the Washington Monument and last at the Jefferson Memorial on the Tidal Basin. The booking page lists the company as formerly Bike and Roll DC.

The booking covers the guide, the bike, a mandatory helmet, a reflective vest, safety lights, a bike bag and an illustrated map. Gratuities and hotel pickup are not included, and riders 16 and up can pick the e-bike option at a higher fare.

Where You Step Off the Bike

The route mixes places you see from the saddle with places you walk into. You stop at the Washington Monument without going inside, and the group passes the south side of the White House, stopping there only if time permits. Through October 31, 2026, at the Secret Service's request, the Park Service has closed E Street NW between 15th and 17th Streets, including its sidewalks and the south fence line of the White House grounds, and its closure page warns that areas there often close without any advance notice.

At the WWII Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial you leave the bike and walk in. At the FDR Memorial you push it through four outdoor rooms, one for each of Roosevelt's terms, and the listing tells you not to miss rubbing Fala's ears for luck, though three riders in 2023 and 2024 wrote that their group skipped FDR. Lincoln and Jefferson both mean climbing their steps on foot. Park rules set that pattern: the Park Service bars bicycles from the steps, colonnades and chambers of both memorials and requires bikes to be parked in the racks at each one.

The Start Time Moves With the Season

Tours depart at 6:30 PM from April through October and at 4:30 PM from November through March, matching both the booking calendar and the operator's own page. The operator pitches it as a ride toward the setting sun, with thinner crowds and cooler air than the daytime Mall. How dark it gets depends on the date: a rider on a June 2024 departure wrote that the sun was still full when the group set off, and an August 2025 rider wrote, "It does get pitch black out by the end of the tour."

The booking lists a reflective vest and safety lights for every rider, and helmets stay on for the whole ride. Riders from 2023 through September 2025 repeatedly wrote that they got no vests and only small front lights, and one said they brought their own reflective vests and were glad they did. The calendar also sells a December 25 departure, while the Park Service lists the Lincoln Memorial as closed on Christmas Day 2026. Dress for the weather. One rider wrote in September 2026, "Great experience, even in the rain," and the operator says it contacts riders in advance if weather cancels a departure.

Kids, E-Bikes and a Weight Limit

The booking page prices riders 12 and under as children. Anyone under 18 needs an adult over 18 present, and the operator asks that adult to check them in and sign the waiver. Children too young or unsure on their own bike can ride in a trailer carriage or on a trailer tandem; the trailer takes children from 12 months who can hold up their head, wear a helmet and stand no taller than 4 feet. The operator asks you to request attachments before the tour.

The e-bike option is for riders 16 and up, and e-bike riders join the same group as the classic bikes: a May 2026 rider whose party were the only ones on e-bikes wrote that keeping pace with the slower bikes got so annoying that they turned the motors off. The operator's own booking notes add a limit the listing leaves out: it cannot take riders of 300 pounds or more. The listing calls the roughly five miles appropriate for the casual exerciser, and it also marks the ride as not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health.

What to Bring to D Street

Bring one government-issued photo ID, which the shop retains as a deposit for the rental, and a credit card to leave on file for the bikes. Water is not provided at the shop or during the ride; bring your own. The shop cannot hold luggage while you ride. The operator suggests closed-toe shoes and clothes that are comfortable without being loose.

Riders in mid-2025 described being offered bike insurance at the counter for an extra per-person charge, which neither the listing nor the operator's booking notes mention. Out on the Mall, the Park Service notes that the Lincoln Memorial's restrooms, museums and elevators close in the evenings, and that the elevator up to the Jefferson Memorial's chamber may be intermittently out of order.

📍 Unlimited Biking is at 701 D Street NW, right by the US Navy Memorial Plaza. Check in 15 minutes before departure; the listing says late arrivals cannot be guaranteed a place. Each guide takes up to 15 riders, and the operator notes that more than one group may be out at the same time. Cancel at least 24 hours ahead for a full refund; inside 24 hours this booking is not refunded.

The last stop puts you on the Jefferson steps, looking back across the Tidal Basin toward the MLK Memorial.
