Washington and Philadelphia in a Day That Starts at 5:00 AM

A guided coach run to two capitals where the real currency is hours, most of them spent moving between short stops.

Plan a two-capital day from Times Square.

Two capitals in one day sounds like a scheduling trick. It is arithmetic, and the operator has already done it: fifteen hours, one coach, a 5:00 AM departure from Times Square.

The day runs south to Washington, works through the Mall and the buildings most people recognize from television, then north to Philadelphia's Old City and the Rocky Steps, then back to where it started. The route is long and the stops are short.

That trade is the product. You are buying distance and a guide, not hours on the ground.

The scoreboard on this listing is split. Across both platforms it holds 4.8 from 2,273 reviews, with 1,924 of those at five stars. Viator's own 173 reviews sit lower, at 4.4. Two audiences, two numbers, one day out.

Amigo Tours USA runs the coach, with a guide licensed in both Washington and Philadelphia.

Washington, Counted in Stops

Washington arrives as a windshield. The coach passes the Pentagon, a military cemetery, the Korean War and Vietnam Veterans memorials, the Washington Monument, the Smithsonian, and the Capitol. Most of that is narration over glass.

The listing counts two walk-offs here: five minutes at the Iwo Jima Memorial and twenty at the White House. There is also a free block in Washington with no meal attached to it.

  • Iwo Jima Memorial: long enough for the sculpture and the view back across the river
  • White House: an exterior stop, no interior access
  • Free time: the operator's own advice is to carry food with you

One thing to settle before you go. The Viator listing drives past the Lincoln Memorial, while the operator's own page lists it among the walk-offs. Check the stop list on your voucher, and treat the running order as traffic-dependent.

Philadelphia in Two Half-Hours

The first half-hour is a guided walk through Independence National Historical Park, where the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall stand a few minutes apart. The second is the Rocky Steps in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Thirty minutes sets a hard edge on what happens in the park. The Liberty Bell Center asks no ticket and no fee, opens at 9:00 AM, and runs first come, first served, with screening for everyone on the way in. Independence Hall is a different building with a different rule: tours leave every twenty minutes from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on timed tickets, and the park asks visitors to arrive thirty minutes ahead for screening. That math rules out the interior on a stop this length.

Treat the hall as an exterior, and the bell as a queue you may or may not clear.

The Rocky Steps are simpler. The climb, the view back down the parkway, and the bronze of George Washington on horseback at Eakins Oval below.

One Guide, Two Languages

Every departure on this listing runs in two languages. The same guide covers English and Spanish, licensed in both Washington and Philadelphia, and the operator states plainly that each explanation is given in both.

A traveler who rode it in August 2023 described the shape of it: "We started our tour promptly at 5am departing NYC, our guide provided lots of information in English and Spanish throughout the tour."

Commentary lands twice, and the rhythm of the coach is set by the switch between them.

  • The audio guide upgrade covers both cities, with download instructions sent once the booking is confirmed
  • Headphones are yours to bring
  • A private departure runs in a single language and adds hotel pickup anywhere between Lower Manhattan and 125th Street

Where the Day Starts

📍 The coach loads in front of the Lids store at the base of Two Times Square, 714 Seventh Avenue, between 47th and 48th Streets. The operator asks for arrival fifteen minutes ahead of the 5:00 AM departure.

There is no hotel pickup on the shared departure. Everyone meets at the same stretch of pavement. The map below pins Father Duffy Square, the public triangle immediately south of that door.

The booking covers the round-trip coach and the guide. Food, drinks, souvenirs, and gratuities are yours.

  • Full refund on cancellations made at least 24 hours before departure
  • Mobile or paper voucher accepted, one per booking
  • Up to fifteen travelers on a single booking, with an adult on it
  • Travelers under 18 are not checked in without an adult
  • New York State law requires a child restraint until age 8, and the operator does not supply one
  • Rated suitable for all fitness levels; the demand here is duration rather than terrain

Fifteen hours from a 5:00 AM start puts the return to Times Square around eight in the evening, before traffic has its say. Anything booked for that night wants slack in it.
