Walk Richmond's Church Hill While Your Phone Asks the Questions

A phone-app scavenger hunt through Church Hill: walk to each pin on the map, and the answer to its question is right around you.

This is Church Hill without a guide. The listing sells a scavenger hunt you play on your own phone: a map of the neighborhood fills with points of interest, and walking up to one unlocks its question. The answer is somewhere around you, in what you can see from where you stand. The operator, Discover Richmond Tours, bills Church Hill as Richmond's oldest neighborhood.

Richmond locals say the hunt still showed them something new. One family who had lived in the city more than ten years wrote that they "still learned quite a bit" about Richmond.

One booking covers one team of up to five, and the team plays on one shared phone. The listing sets one price for the whole group.

Start a Few Steps From St. John's Church

The operator suggests starting at Patrick Henry Park, 2400 East Broad Street. It says there is plenty of on-street parking nearby. St. John's says there is usually ample parking in the block or two around the church. Historic St. John's Church stands at 2401 East Broad Street. The operator's own Church Hill guide describes the neighborhood as anchored by that church, where Patrick Henry delivered his "Give Me Liberty, Or Give Me Death!" speech. Walking the churchyard is free, and St. John's says its gates are open whenever its visitor center is, Thursday through Monday until 4 pm.

The park is where you begin, and the listing has you end back there. The order in between is loose: the operator suggests the numbered order, says it is not necessary, and lets you skip locations.

Two and a Half Hours, or Two Weekends

The listing promises at least two to three hours outdoors, and the operator counts 30+ points of interest in each of its hunts. One traveler who visited every site in the app in 2023 called it a two-and-a-half hour walk and wrote that the trivia questions were relatively easy to solve.

You do not have to finish in one go. The operator says your password can be used to access the hunt at any time. When a player was rained out a third of the way through in April 2023, the operator replied that there is no time limit. One family with a one-year-old in a stroller took their time, knowing they could come back the next weekend for the places they missed.

Several reviewers point to the overlooks: views of the city and the river from the parks along the way, with spots to stop and take a breather.

The Question Opens When You Reach the Pin

Download the LoQuiz app before you set out. The operator names it as the app the game runs on, and its confirmation email carries the login. Once you are inside the circle around a point on the map, its task opens on its own. Look around for the answer, and tap Hint if you get stuck.

Set the phone up before the first pin. Allow LoQuiz to use your location, which is how a question knows you have arrived. LoQuiz's help pages say you need a connection to start the game and strongly recommend mobile data; questions, answers and hints keep working through short gaps in signal, while photos or video inside a question need data to open. If you are inside a circle and the question stays shut, those pages point to a weak location fix: a question will not open while the phone's accuracy is worse than 100 meters, and the advice is to move to a wider street or open place.

The format is non-competitive, and you set the pace. One traveler noted that every clue was found in the surroundings and none needed previous knowledge of the city. The operator adds that you will never need to break the law, destroy property or trespass.

One Extra Step Between Booking and Playing

Booking here does not hand you the game yet. The listing says Viator cannot send your unique password, so you exchange the Viator ticket on the operator's site for one of its own. The operator says the swap is quick and free, and its email then carries your password and app instructions. The listing warns that a Viator booking can take up to 24 hours to process, so book at least a day before you play. All sales are final, with no refund for cancellations.

Wheelchair and stroller access is unconfirmed. The listing ticks both, but the operator's own pages and booking notes do not address access either way. The only official word near the start comes from St. John's, which says an elevator on 24th Street gives access to its grounds and its brick walkways are navigable by wheelchair.

Bring a charger for your phone, a bottle of water and comfortable shoes. Asked how much walking it takes, the operator answers "as much or little as you like."
