Walk Muir Woods on Your Own, Then Sausalito

A small-group van crosses the Golden Gate, leaves you 75 minutes among the Muir Woods redwoods, then an hour in Sausalito.

A guide drives a black Mercedes Sprinter van out of San Francisco, across the Golden Gate Bridge, past the Marin Headlands and into the redwood canyon at Muir Woods National Monument, narrating on the road. Inside Muir Woods the time is yours: the operator says it does not lead walks there. Sausalito follows, with about an hour on the waterfront.

The listing sells the trip as five hours. The operator's own page says four.

One booking holds up to 14 travelers and must include an adult, and there is a separate child ticket for ages 15 and under. The Muir Woods entrance fee is already in the price. The park charges it from age 16, the same age at which this listing's adult ticket starts.

Ten Minutes at Vista Point, Then the Headlands

North of the bridge, the van pulls into Vista Point for about ten minutes, long enough to walk the railing, look back at the San Francisco skyline, and catch the morning light on the towers. From there, the drive winds into the Marin Headlands on roads commercial buses can't take. That stretch is a scenic drive, with the guide telling stories about the area.

Your Own Pace, on the Van's Clock

The listing gives 75 minutes in Muir Woods and describes an easy path among old-growth coastal redwoods, some more than 250 feet tall. Once the van drops you off, you're on your own. The main trail follows Redwood Creek along a flat, paved boardwalk that winds through the canyon floor. The park provides complimentary manual wheelchairs on a first-come, first-served basis at the visitor center, though the vehicle itself does not have a lift; the operator's FAQ says travelers must be able to step on and off the van.

Note the van's return time before you set off: drivers leave on schedule and will not wait for late passengers. Two travelers noted this summer that the van departed without passengers who returned late at Muir Woods.

An Hour in Sausalito, or Stay for the Ferry

Sausalito is the last stop, with about an hour for the waterfront, the houseboats, the galleries and lunch. Food and drinks are not included, and many travelers eat here. If an hour is not enough, you can stay and take the ferry back at your own cost. The operator asks you to tell the guide in advance.

One traveler in September got closer to 45 minutes there; others in the van had an Alcatraz ferry to catch.

📍 Morning pickup: 488 Post St, San Francisco, outside Cafe Encore near Union Square. Afternoon pickup and every morning drop-off: Pier 33 on the Embarcadero.

  • The National Park Service notes there is no parking at Pier 33. The operator suggests the garages at 55 and 80 Francisco Street, or the F-line streetcar.
  • Children 8 and under need a booster seat. The operator asks you to request one in advance or bring your own.
  • The operator says a wheelchair can ride in the van, as long as its user can get in and out of the van without it.
  • Gratuity is not included. The listing calls 20 percent the standard.
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure. The operator runs rain or shine and cancels, with a refund, only for extreme weather.
