Walk In at Makena Landing, Swim Out to Turtle Town

A small-group snorkel that starts on the sand at Makena Landing and swims out to Turtle Town, with guide photos included.

Swim out from Makena Landing to Turtle Town.

Zephyr Maui describes itself as a locally owned outfit based in Kihei, and this is the outing it calls its signature snorkel: a guided snorkel from the beach at Makena Landing to the stretch of South Maui reef known as Turtle Town. There is no boat. You walk into the water with a guide, practice breathing and floating near the shore, then swim out over lava rock and coral looking for Hawaiian green sea turtles.

The operator caps a group at ten people and lists two as the minimum for a departure. Photos and raw video clips shot by the guide come with the booking.

This listing is the operator's standard turtle snorkel, sold per person. A single traveler can book it, though the operator's own page lists two people as the minimum for a departure, and the listing lets the operator cancel when numbers fall short. On the booking page the rate for children aged 7 to 15 currently matches the adult rate. Booking closes 18 hours before the start time, and confirmation is instant.

Gear Check on the Sand, Then an Hour Over the Reef

The operator lays the outing out in four steps. Check-in and gear fitting take about 15 minutes at the shoreline, with a short demonstration and safety briefing. Another 15 minutes go to the shore entry and practice, getting comfortable breathing and floating beside the guide. Then comes the guided swim over lava caves and coral at Turtle Town, which the listing puts at an hour, and the session ends back on the beach with a quick recap.

Snorkel gear and life jackets come with the booking. The booking form asks for each guest's weight, and the operator asks for everyone's shoe size in advance. Several travelers describe a real swim out from the shore before the reef, and a number of them mention a paid extra on the day: a motorized sea scooter that pulls you through the water. The operator also sells a sea scooter outing as a separate Turtle Town tour, and this listing neither includes a scooter nor quotes a price for adding one.

The Guide Holds the Camera While You Watch the Turtles

Photos and raw video clips are part of the booking, and the guide does the shooting. The operator says the guide airdrops the pictures before you leave the beach.

Turtle Town is a stretch of South Maui reef where green sea turtles gather, and the operator's own FAQ says sightings are never guaranteed. The listing's Turtle Guarantee is a free place on another of the operator's outings when no turtles show up. When one does appear, the operator asks guests to keep at least 10 feet away, the viewing distance NOAA Fisheries recommends for sea turtles in Hawaii.

Seven and Up, and Able to Swim

The minimum age is 7, and the operator's own page says every guest needs to be able to swim. Its booking-system description puts it as first-timers welcome, provided they can lightly swim, with life vests supplied and guides carrying flotation boards. The listing tags the outing as suitable for all fitness levels; the operator's swimming requirement is the stricter of the two.

Anyone who cannot swim is pointed to the operator's separate First Timers and Non Swimmers outing in Wailea, which is a different booking. The listing also marks this snorkel as not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health, and every booking needs an adult.

Five Start Times Between 8:30 AM and 12:30 PM

The current booking calendar shows the snorkel every day at 8:30 AM, 9:30 AM, 10:30 AM, 11:30 AM and 12:30 PM. Two travelers who went this year favored the early slots, one for better visibility and one because wind and waves build as the day goes on, and the operator's FAQ says morning tours at Turtle Town typically get calmer conditions and better visibility.

Conditions still set the day. The listing lets the operator cancel for bad weather, and two travelers describe the plan changing on rough days, in one case with a kayak leg added and in another with a different site proposed. For the bag, the operator suggests a towel, a swimsuit, a rash guard or sun shirt, and reef-safe sunscreen. Make the sunscreen a mineral one, made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide: a Maui County ordinance in force from October 1, 2022 bans the sale and use of non-mineral sunscreens without a prescription. Gratuities are not included.

Meet at Makena Landing Park. Type "Makena Landing" into your GPS, which the operator prefers to the street address, then drive past the outdoor showers and restrooms and up the small hill, and look for the white van parked 100 to 200 yards beyond them. Check the booking confirmation before you drive; the operator treats it as the final word on the meeting point and gear. Hotel pickup is not part of the booking.

Cancel at least 24 hours before the start for a full refund. By the operator's timeline the whole outing runs about two hours, and it finishes back on the sand at Makena with the pictures already handed over.
