Waikiki to Makapuu and Back on a Day-Rental Moped

A day on a Genuine Buddy basket moped from a Waikiki shop, with the operator's coast-road maps and a lesson for first-time riders.

Nobody leads this ride. Hawaiian Style Rentals & Sales, which says it has rented mopeds in Waikiki since 2005, hands over a basket moped, a helmet, a lock and its own route maps, and the day is yours until 5:00 PM. The moped is a Genuine Buddy 50 with a front basket, built for one rider, and the driver needs a car license and has to be 18 or older. The operator's FAQ says it honors licenses from other countries.

One booking covers one to five mopeds, one rider on each. The online price is the day rate. Tax, a gas prepayment and a choice between paid coverage and a card deposit are settled at the counter, with the numbers further down.

The Moped Stays Off Every Freeway and the Pali

The operator's FAQ lists the roads its mopeds may not use: H-1, H-2, H-3, the Pali, the Likelike and the Farrington, plus any road faster than 45 mph. Hawaii's transportation department separately says mopeds may not be driven on freeways. With the Pali, the Likelike and the H-3 all off-limits, the operator's routes to the windward side go the long way, east along Kalanianaole Highway. Its route notes warn of fast traffic and strong headwinds there, and the ride back toward Honolulu is the easier one, with the wind behind you. State law caps any moped at 35 mph and requires moped riders to use the bicycle lane wherever the road has one. The operator's coverage terms add that riding a road it does not permit voids the coverage.

Hanauma Bay Closes Mondays and Tuesdays

The operator's FAQ tells riders to reach Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay and Kailua. Its Kailua route follows about thirty miles of coast into Kailua Town, past Hanauma Bay, the Halona Blowhole lookout, Sandy Beach, Makapuu and Waimanalo, and comes back the same road; the operator budgets six hours for it. Two of those stops have entry rules for visitors from outside Hawaii. Hanauma Bay is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, charges non-residents USD 25 plus an online fee, and requires visitors to leave by 4:00 PM. Hanauma Bay reservations open two days ahead. Hiking Diamond Head State Monument needs an entry and parking reservation for non-residents, at USD 5 a person and USD 10 per vehicle, and the state park rules count a moped as a vehicle.

What the Counter Adds to the Day Rate

Plan on three charges at the counter on top of the online day rate: tax, a gas prepayment, and either damage coverage or a card hold. The listing puts the gas prepayment at USD 5 a moped; the operator's own site lists USD 6 and taxes and fees of 9%. The operator prices its optional theft and damage coverage at USD 25 a day for a moped, which matches what renters from 2024 through 2026 report paying. Decline it and plan on a USD 200 credit card authorization on each moped, which can take up to two weeks to release. The listing describes that hold as required on every moped, while the operator's FAQ says it applies only to riders who decline coverage. The coverage terms say it is void if you leave the moped without locking its rear tire to something fixed, or let someone else ride it. The state transportation department's guide for moped riders notes that chaining one to a bike rack is not always possible or legal, and quotes Honolulu's rule letting several mopeds share one parallel-parking space, each angled about 60 degrees to the curb. Cash deposits are not accepted, and the FAQ says most car insurance and credit card policies do not cover a moped rental. Two renters, in 2025 and 2026, say staff pushed the coverage hard at check-in, so decide before you arrive.

Paperwork and a Road Test Come Before the Ride

📍 The booking's pickup pin is the operator's Lemon Road shop, 2556 Lemon Rd in Waikiki. The listing asks you to arrive between 8:30 and 10:00 AM and warns that a moped may not be available after 10:00. Before you ride, the operator runs registration, a safety orientation and an instructional video. First-time riders also take a road test around the block with staff following, and the operator says nobody leaves until they feel comfortable. It welcomes first-time riders but says they must already know how to ride a bicycle, and it rates the standard basket moped a good size for anyone shorter than 5 ft 9 in. Bring the driver's license and a credit card in the driver's own name. Honolulu's driver licensing office says a license from a country that ratified the 1949 Geneva road-traffic convention is valid in Hawaii with your passport for up to a year after you enter the U.S., and it strongly recommends an International Driving Permit. State law requires a helmet on any moped rented from a company unless the rider holds a motorcycle license, and the operator hands one out with the moped. Plan to have it back at 5:00 PM.

For a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before pickup through this booking; the operator asks 48 hours' notice on reservations made directly with it. The listing does not recommend the ride for pregnant travelers or anyone with a spinal injury. The operator's route pages list close-toed shoes, water and sunscreen. After that, the coast east of Diamond Head is yours until five.
