Waikīkī Tavern
bar
Once a beachfront hub and early gathering spot for gay men, this vanished 1920s tavern gave way to Kūhiō Beach Park.
Description

Before its demolition, the site had hosted a succession of eateries and bars dating back to the 1880s. The expanded property opened in November 1928, designed to resemble a 1700s English tavern alongside the connected Waikiki Inn. The complex included a 160-seat tavern, sidewalk retail spaces, and rooms for 104 guests. Its role as a pre-World War II gathering spot was later documented in James Jones's 1951 novel 'From Here to Eternity.' Condemned in the late 1950s and razed in April 1960, the grounds are now where the Duke Kahanamoku statue stands.
