Volunteer Gardeners Tend Native Plants Under the BQE
A two hour volunteer session tending native plantings in a nursery built directly beneath an elevated expressway.
🌱 The Session
🧤 What Fills Two Hours
Under the K Bridge Park runs a working nursery in the shadow of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. The garden club meets there on Sunday morning, October 18, for a structured two hour session with native plants. Volunteers move between seed trays, raised beds, and mulch paths while staff explain what each species does for the site. The format stays closer to a workshop than a cleanup, with time for questions and notebooks.
🪴 Work You Will Actually Do
Expect to kneel on mulch and handle wet soil for most of the morning. Volunteers thin seedlings, transplant young natives into larger trays, and clear invasive growth from the bed edges. Staff hand out gloves and hand tools, and they walk the rows answering questions about which plants hold the slope. Many regulars bring a notebook, and writing down species names turns a work shift into a lesson.
🚇 Getting There and Signing Up
Advance registration is required, and signing up ahead beats arriving cold. The session runs from 10 in the morning until noon, and the park sits in Brooklyn a short walk from the waterfront. Wear closed shoes and clothes that can take mud. Rain rarely cancels a planting morning, though organizers post updates before the start. Anyone wanting a quiet, hands on start to Sunday fits here, and anyone expecting a social gathering will find it calmer than that.
