Vermont Hills Community Garden
4.7 (3)park
Free entry
A quiet neighborhood garden that replaced an asphalt church parking lot with rich soil and produce for the community.
Description

The project dates to 1982, when the Vermont Hills Methodist Church teamed up with Portland Parks & Recreation to transform an empty field on church grounds. As plot demand grew, a 2010 expansion unpaved the corridor between the church and existing plots, adding a 7,200-square-foot growing area across a site that now totals 0.43 acres. Removing the hard surface curtailed runoff into the watershed, channeling improved growing conditions into harvests directed toward people in need across southwest Portland.
