Vampires and Lost Love on Providence's Benefit Street After Dark

A lantern-led evening walk on Providence's Mile of History, with stops at the Athenaeum, an armory and an old funeral parlor.

Benefit Street is the whole stage here. The operator, Providence Ghost Tour, calls it the Mile of History and fills its newest route with tales of lost love, vampires and courtroom dramas, told under the streetlamps.

The listing counts nearly a dozen haunted sites, all on this one street, and the walk begins and ends at the same cemetery gate. A guide carrying a lantern sets the scene before the first stop.

The booking below is for the shared public walk, priced per person in three bands: child (5–13), adult (14–64) and senior (65+). An adult must make the booking, and one booking covers up to 15 travelers.

Cancel at least 24 hours before the start for a full refund; inside 24 hours there is none.

Nearly a Dozen Stops Along One Street

The route stays on Benefit Street and takes in nearly a dozen haunted sites, including the House of a Thousand Candles, the Providence Athenaeum, one of the city's oldest armories, an old funeral parlor and two art clubs. One stretch passes over the graves of early Providence residents.

No part of the itinerary includes admission to a building, so plan on hearing the stories outdoors, on the sidewalks. The operator's booking notes say the group walks the sidewalks and crosses the street as it goes.

Soldiers, Courtrooms and Runaway Horses

The stories come from the street's own past. The operator promises tales of lost love, vampires and courtroom dramas, and the listing adds soldiers at the armory, careening carriages and runaway horses in the road.

The company's FAQ, written for its flagship tour, says its guides rely on storytelling and use no special effects or paid actors. The same FAQ says the company does not guarantee a ghost sighting.

Who Carries the Lantern

Providence Ghost Tour dates to 2006, and its owner, Courtney, is also its lead guide. Reviews of this route from 2026 mention Courtney, Kelly and Lily by name, and the company's guide page says Kelly has guided with it since 2008.

One Viator reviewer wrote in July 2026 that Kelly "really made the characters come alive." The listing does not say which guide leads a given night.

Brick, Cobblestones and Dim Streetlamps

The operator's booking notes call Benefit Street fairly flat, with old sidewalks of brick, cobblestone and pavement that are uneven in places, so wear stable walking shoes. Streetlamps light the route, but only dimly. Bring a flashlight if walking in semi-darkness bothers you; the listing includes one, but the operator's booking page sells it as an add-on.

There are few places to sit and no restrooms on the route, so use one before you arrive. The listing marks the walk as suitable for all fitness levels and not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health. Guests using a wheelchair, scooter or walker should expect occasionally uneven sidewalks, the operator says.

🕯️ Meet at the iron fence of the Tillinghast Cemetery, just right of the Barker Playhouse at 400 Benefit Street, on the corner of Transit Street. Give the guide the name on your booking and keep the confirmation email at hand.

Parking is on the street along Benefit and its side streets and may be a few blocks off, so allow 10 to 15 extra minutes; tours leave on time. The walk goes ahead in rain and is called off for unsafe weather such as a thunderstorm overhead or ice. The walk ends back at the cemetery gate.
