Description

Commissioned in 1911, the USS Utah served across three decades before the 1941 attack—taking part in the 1914 occupation of Veracruz, protecting convoys from Ireland during World War I, and carrying Herbert Hoover on tours of South America. In 1931, under the terms of the London Naval Treaty, she underwent conversion into a demilitarized target and gunnery training ship. After quickly rolling over and sinking during the opening minutes of the raid, her wreck remains in the harbor off Ford Island's northwest shore, marked by a memorial erected near the ship in 1972.
