Underwater Lab or Prison Break: One Hour at The Rim

Five built sets at The Rim, an hour on the clock, and as many hints as your team decides to ask for.

Pick the Underwater Lab or Prison Break at The Rim.

The Escape Game San Antonio sits inside The Rim on Worth Parkway, with dining and retail either side of it, and it runs five themed rooms that each give you sixty minutes. The sets are built rather than printed. A log cabin with a lantern burning by the door. A submarine lab lined with backlit specimen jars. A cell block with a striped uniform still hanging on the hook.

Unless every seat in the room is bought, other people can book into your game and play on your team. That single line shapes the hour more than the room you choose.

Booking is per person and covers admission to one adventure. Confirmation is instant, the booking window closes two hours before your start time, and a mobile ticket is all you need at the counter.

Cancelling at least twenty-four hours ahead returns the full amount, and that is the window attached to this reservation. The operator separately reschedules by phone up to four hours before a game.

Five Rooms, Five Difficulty Numbers

The operator scores its own rooms out of ten and prints the number on each room page. Prison Break sits at nine, the highest of the five. Special Ops: Mysterious Market is an eight. The Depths and Gold Rush are both sevens. Playground is a six.

The booking form takes up to twelve travelers on one reservation, and the room you choose sets the actual cap. Playground seats twelve. The other four rooms seat eight each.

Lockers, Lanterns and a Wall of Specimen Jars

The Depths lines its walls with lockers and pressure gauges, and puts a shelf of specimen jars behind glass, each one lit a different color. Gold Rush sets a log cabin at the top of a short flight of stairs, ferns and painted ridgelines running off into the dark behind it. Special Ops hands you a marker and a glowing map board to work on.

These games run at other branches too, and the company uses one set of room photographs across them. The storefront is the only picture here that is specific to The Rim.

The company describes its rooms as exciting and adventurous rather than scary or dark, while allowing that a couple of themes, escaping a prison or stopping an attack, can feel intense. By its own account there is no adult language, no crude jokes and nothing gross in any of the five.

Who Else Is in the Room

Most games run private, meaning your group and nobody else. That holds for as long as every seat is spoken for. When seats are left over the operator can sell them, and it says shared games turn up most often at weekends, on holidays and during its busiest hours.

The arithmetic follows from the room, and the number you buy is the number that settles whether a stranger joins your team. The company's own framing is that shared teams often work out well, with extra hands on the puzzles. Either way, know which of the two you booked before you walk in.

Hints Are Unlimited, and the Door Opens From Inside

Ask for help as often as you like. The operator offers unlimited hints and attaches no scoring penalty to them, which changes the texture of the hour. The question stops being whether you will get out and becomes how much of it you work out yourselves.

The door is not locked on you either. Every game room has an exit button, and you can step out whenever you need to.

Games are recommended for ages thirteen and up, and younger players are welcome. A paying adult of eighteen or older has to play alongside anyone aged fourteen or under, and anyone under eighteen needs an adult to sign their waiver. Children of four and under come at no charge, though the operator asks you to call ahead so it can hold their place, because every room has a fixed cap. On this booking the paying age band starts at five.

The Rim puts restaurants a short walk from the door, so an hour in a locked room can be the first stop of an evening. North Italia, Torchy's Tacos and Lupe Tortilla are among the neighbours the operator names, and parking is on the shared surface lots around the buildings.

Arrive fifteen minutes before your slot and sign the waiver online before you get there. Alcohol is not permitted on the premises. A lidded non-alcoholic drink is fine to carry in, though you will want both hands free once the clock starts.

Sixty minutes run on the clock. The debrief and the team photo come after.
