Under Pennybacker Bridge, Then Down Lake Austin Past Mount Bonnell

A shared two-hour pontoon cruise past cliffs, lakefront homes and Laguna Gloria, with a captain who talks at the landmarks.

This is a shared two-hour pontoon cruise run by Wake Riderz, a locally owned Lake Austin boat company that dates its start to 2015. It boards at Loop 360 Boat Ramp, a small Travis County park under the south end of Pennybacker Bridge, then heads down the lake past the cliffs of Mount Bonnell, Laguna Gloria and Austin Country Club toward Tom Miller Dam before returning to the ramp. The operator says routes can change with the weather, lake conditions or safe operation.

The listing describes Lake Austin as a 22-mile lake with a constant water level and credits that for the steady ride. Seats are sold one at a time. Expect to share the boat.

Departures run Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only, at 10:45 AM, 1:15 PM and 3:45 PM, according to the booking calendar checked on October 16, 2026. At that check, adults and children aged 3 to 12 paid the same fare, USD 69, travelers 62 and over paid USD 64, and infants up to age 2 rode free on a lap. The county's ramp entry fee is not part of that price.

The listing's title names three slots, AM, PM and Sunset. The last one leaves at 3:45 PM for a two-hour cruise, so how much sunset you see depends on the time of year.

The Captain Talks at the Landmarks

The operator calls this a partially guided tour. Its own tour page says it does not believe a boat tour needs nonstop narration: the captain points out landmarks, tells the stories behind them and answers questions, with time for photos in between. Expect the captain to talk at the landmarks and go quiet in between. Travelers from 2022 to 2026 single out the local history they heard; one 2023 reviewer wished the guide had said more about the area.

The landmarks carry the stories. Pennybacker Bridge, built in 1982, is a steel arch, a design the listing says keeps support columns out of the water for skiers and wake surfers below. Laguna Gloria is the 1916 Italian-style villa of Clara Driscoll, who helped preserve the Alamo, and the site is now home to The Contemporary Austin. Tom Miller Dam has run since 1940, with Lake Austin on its upstream side and Lady Bird Lake below it.

The Stretch Travelers Call Little Italy

Between the landmarks, the scenery is shoreline: limestone cliffs, wooded coves and waterfront homes, from small boathouses to full estates. Several travelers name one stretch as their favorite part, the one the operator's own photo caption calls Little Italy; a 2022 reviewer said it felt like a glimpse of Italy.

The boat passes below the cliffs of Mount Bonnell, a pass-by on the listing, so climbing to its overlook is a separate outing on foot. Austin Country Club, the private club the listing ties to the course designer Pete Dye and the golf teacher Harvey Penick, sits on the bank along the way. Travelers in 2022 and 2025 also wrote about swans on the water.

Shade Overhead, No Restroom Aboard

The boats are 24-foot Bentley pontoons with two Bimini tops, and the operator says public tours generally run with the full canopy up, depending on the weather and safe operation. One 2024 traveler noticed the sun moving around under it and suggested sunscreen and long sleeves anyway. Bottled water is included.

Food is welcome. The operator's tour page allows drinks you bring for passengers 21 and older, and both the operator and the listing ban glass; smoking is not allowed. There is no restroom on the boat, so use the portable toilets at the ramp before boarding.

Life vests are provided, and anyone under 13 must wear one while the boat is underway; infants ride on an adult's lap. The listing ticks stroller-friendly and suitable for all fitness levels, but neither the operator's pages nor the county's say anything about wheelchair boarding from the ramp, so raise it in the special requirements field when you book.

Cash at the Booth, Rideshare to the Ramp

Loop 360 Boat Ramp is a county park, and Travis County charges its own entry fee at the booth: USD 5 per person, USD 3 for visitors 62 and over, and nothing for children 12 and under or for disabled veterans rated 50 percent or more. The booth takes cash only, no cards. Tell the booth staff you are booked with Wake Riderz.

Parking is the harder part. The county says highway construction has limited parking inside the park to its 10 boat-trailer spaces, and it points visitors chartering a boat to rideshare. The operator points to free public parking just outside the entrance, on the right before the booth, and warns that it fills on busy weekends, which is when this tour runs. The listing puts the ramp a 20-minute drive from downtown; two travelers put the trip at 25 and about 30 minutes.

📍 Inside the park, walk toward the water. The three boat ramps are on the left, and the group waits by the bench at the top of the ramps on the right side. Arrive 30 minutes early for parking, check-in and the liability waiver, because the boat departs on time.

  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, per the listing
  • The listing lets the operator cancel for bad weather or too few travelers; travelers in 2019 and 2023 wrote about getting that call, one the night before and one on the way to the ramp, while a couple in February 2023 sailed as the only two guests
  • The captain's tip is optional on this listing

Don't save this for your last free day in Austin. Then take a seat facing the stern and watch the arch of Pennybacker Bridge shrink behind you as the boat heads down the lake.
