Description

Funded by tens of thousands of citizens donating pocket change after Grant’s death in 1885, the memorial paired skyscraper pioneer William Le Baron Jenney’s structural vision with casting by Italian-born sculptor Louis T. Rebisso. Its 1891 dedication drew over 200,000 people in a carriage procession stretching from downtown up Michigan Avenue to Lincoln Park, gathering Civil War veterans, cabinet officials, and Grant’s widow.
