Tyler Perry's Studio Gates, Then Dr. King's Church

A narrated half-day drive through Black Atlanta, from the West End and the HBCU colleges to Sweet Auburn, with a few short stops.

Plan a ride past Tyler Perry Studios to Dr. King's church.

Roundabout Atlanta Tours & Transportation runs this as a narrated drive. The itinerary names seventeen places, and most of them go past the window: City Hall and the Fulton County Courthouse, the Olympic cauldron, Morehouse and Spelman, the Gulch with its view of Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Only a handful are step-out stops, anchored by Auburn Avenue and a thirty-five-minute lunch break.

That shape suits someone who wants the outline of Black Atlanta in one sitting and will come back alone to whatever grabs them. It suits less well anyone hoping to spend the morning inside museums.

The mix is also wider than the title suggests. Civil rights history shares the ride with present-day Black business, the colleges and Atlanta's film industry.

Departures leave at 10:00 AM and 1:30 PM. When we checked in October 2026, the booking calendar and the operator's own reservation system both ran Thursday through Monday, with nothing on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

One booking takes up to twelve travelers. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund. A departure can also be called off if too few people sign up, and the listing then offers another date or a full refund.

What Goes Past the Window, and Where You Step Out

The itinerary gives stop times to five places and none to the rest. A house the listing says Tyler Perry used for films like Diary of a Mad Black Woman gets five minutes. The West End, which the listing describes as Victorian homes, street murals and Black-owned shops, gets twenty, with a restroom. Lunch gets thirty-five and Auburn Avenue gets thirty. The fifth, Tyler Perry Studios, depends on the day.

The operator's own tour page counts three or four stops, and the listing says up to five. The operator adds that hop-off stops vary because some sites only open on certain days or at certain times.

Everything else, including the Atlanta University Center colleges, Castleberry Hill and the downtown Olympic sites, comes as commentary from your seat. Plan on a driving tour with a few short walks in it. Travelers who wanted more time on foot have said so, and one wrote in March 2026 that a lot of it was passing by.

Thirty Minutes on Auburn Avenue

The listing gives Auburn Avenue thirty minutes and names Ebenezer Baptist Church, the house where Dr. King was born and The King Center, where Dr. and Mrs. King are buried. Thirty minutes covers a walk along the street and a pause at the tomb; going inside each building takes longer. Travelers have called it the highlight of the day, and several wished it ran longer.

The vehicle also runs down the rest of Sweet Auburn, past the Atlanta Daily World, Atlanta Life, the Apex Museum and the Royal Peacock.

The birth home itself is closed for renovations. When we checked in October 2026, the National Park Service's hours page still said so, and added that rangers give talks about the house in the bookstore next door several times a day. The park service opens Historic Ebenezer from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, The King Center lists 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and both close on Thanksgiving, December 25 and January 1.

The Day You Book Changes the Stops

The listing says Tyler Perry Studios only lets visitors into its welcome entrance after 5:00 PM on Fridays, all day on Saturdays and Sundays, and on holidays. On other days the vehicle passes the gate. The operator's FAQ puts it more simply: weekends only. One traveler wrote that the group drove past because no visits are allowed on weekdays.

Lunch is a real stop, and it is on you. The listing describes family-owned counters with soul food, barbecue, West African and other cooking. The operator's FAQ names two lunch and restroom stops, the Municipal Curb Market and the Citizens Trust Bank building.

The day of the week matters here too. The market's own site says it is closed on Sundays, and Sweet Auburn Bread Company, the bakery travelers name for its sweet potato cheesecake, lists itself closed on Sundays and Mondays. On a Sunday departure the market is not an option, and on a Sunday or Monday neither is the bakery.

When both are open, the food stops can be a lunch counter and a bakery, and a couple of travelers would have skipped the bakery. Bring money for food. Neither food nor tips are included.

Leave Room on Either Side of It

The listing sells this as four and a half hours, the operator's site calls it about four, and its booking system says four hours and twenty minutes. Travelers have reported it running the full length and beyond, so keep the hours after it clear. One wrote that a tour scheduled to end at 2:00 PM was still going after 3:00.

It runs rain or shine. In severe weather, which the operator lists as lightning, snow or ice, the tour may be rescheduled or refunded, and the listing asks you to call the number on your voucher to reconfirm.

The vehicle is air-conditioned, and bottled water is provided. You spend most of the time seated, and the listing rates the tour for all fitness levels. Neither the listing nor the operator says anything about wheelchair access. The listing marks the tour as fine for strollers, the operator's pages do not mention them, and child car seats are not provided. If any of these matter to your party, ask the operator before you book.

📍 Meet at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis, 265 Peachtree Center Ave NE, on the hotel's Peachtree Center Avenue curbside. Look for the big grey sign reading Marriott Marquis Atlanta, directly across the street from the Hyatt Regency. The listing and the operator's booking system both ask you to arrive 20 to 30 minutes before departure. Another line in the listing says 15, so plan on arriving 30 minutes early.

The hotel has no free parking. The listing points to paid garages about a block away, at ten to thirty dollars. MARTA rail, Uber and Lyft all reach the hotel, and its lobby has seating, restrooms and a Starbucks open only from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

The operator's tour page lists centralized pickup and drop-off. If thirty minutes on Auburn Avenue felt short, Ebenezer and The King Center are there to come back to on your own.
