Two West Village Jazz Rooms, One Night That Ends at Four
Two distinct jazz rooms sit less than a minute apart on the same West Village block. Mezzrow offers an intimate, quiet grand piano set first, followed by Smalls for a raw, energetic late jam session that stretches into the early morning.
Mezzrow to Smalls on West 10th Street
🎹 Mezzrow first, at the 10:30 piano set
Mezzrow is a quiet, narrow listening room at 163 West 10th Street, built around a full-size grand piano down a steep basement flight with no elevator. Sets run nightly at 6, 7:30, 9 and 10:30 pm, each lasting about an hour; reserve the 10:30 set for 35 dollars (40 on weekends) or 25 at the door if space remains. Arrive 30 minutes before showtime for seating, and keep in mind that one drink per person per set is required on top of music admission.

🌙 Smalls picks up after midnight
Smalls sits roughly 80 meters west down another steep basement staircase at 183 West 10th Street, turning the mood from quiet recital to a crowded, high-energy underground room. After the regular 10:30 ticketed show clears, the club calendar lists the late jam from 11:45 pm to 4 am. The jam isn't sold in advance; ask the door about cover, and one drink per person still applies.

🚇 The last hour, and the ride home
Arrive 30 minutes early for Mezzrow’s 10:30 pm set, walk west after the room clears, and expect a short wait outside Smalls while the 10:30 set breaks down and the room resets ahead of the 11:45 pm jam. The 1 train at Christopher Street–Stonewall is two minutes away and runs all night, about every 20 minutes after 1 am. PATH at 137 Christopher Street runs overnight toward New Jersey roughly every 40 minutes, but check official transit status for scheduled service changes and monthly maintenance closures.
