Two to a Kayak, Out to La Jolla's Sea Caves

A guided paddle from a La Jolla Shores storefront out to the sea caves, in a two-seater you share with one other person.

Paddle a tandem kayak to La Jolla's sea caves.

La Jolla's sea caves open at the waterline, cut into the sandstone under the bluffs. This tour reaches them from the water. It starts at a storefront on Avenida de la Playa called La Jolla Kayak, walks you down to the sand with a guide, runs a paddle lesson there, and sends you out through the shore break.

One reservation here buys a whole tandem kayak, and a tandem kayak carries two people. The listing says so in capital letters, and the operator repeats it on its own tour page. Booking alone means paying for a two-seater.

Departures run through the day starting at 9:00 AM, weather permitting. The operator's page for this tour puts the whole visit at 90 to 120 minutes, with about 90 of those spent on the water. The booking page prints a flat 90. Guiding is in English. The kayak, the paddle, and a life jacket come with the reservation.

What the Guide Is Scanning For

The paddle crosses the La Jolla Ecological Reserve, which the operator describes as a marine protected area. Its own list of what turns up is specific: California sea lions, harbor seals, Garibaldi, Brandt's cormorants, brown pelicans, leopard sharks, and dolphins.

Sea lions are the ones most likely to come to you. They haul out on the rocks under the bluffs and swim out to look at passing boats. Garibaldi, also on that list, is California's state marine fish.

Whales are a different booking. The operator runs a whale watching kayak tour from December through late February, and this is not that trip.

The Ocean Decides Both Ends of the Trip

Going inside a cave is conditional, and every source says it the same way. The operator writes that entrance depends on weather and ocean conditions. The booking page repeats that cave entry is not guaranteed and leaves the call to the guide. On a settled day the group threads into one cave. On a rough one the tour stays outside and works the coast.

The same swell runs the start and the finish. You launch off the beach through the shore break and ride a wave back in at the end. Wet is the default state of this trip.

By the operator's count there are seven sea caves along this stretch of cliff.

Who Fits in the Boat

  • Ages 6 and up in a tandem, seated with an adult over 18
  • 450 pounds maximum for a tandem kayak
  • No paddling experience needed. The lesson on the sand runs 10 to 15 minutes
  • Rated suitable for all fitness levels
  • Not recommended for travelers who are pregnant, or who have spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health
  • Service animals allowed

The booking page says participants have to be able to swim. The operator answers that same question on its own FAQ and says no, the flotation device keeps you afloat. It does ask that you be comfortable in the water. Kayaks flip.

What Happens at the Shop

Check-in is at the storefront, under a yellow awning. Front desk staff fit you with a helmet and a personal flotation device, then hand you over to your guide. The walk from there to the launch is one to two blocks.

Wetsuits and lockers are both rentals, priced on top of the tour. The wetsuit matters most in fall, winter, and spring, which is when the operator offers it. Waterproof phone cases are sold at the shop. Gratuities, food, and drink sit outside the booking.

Parking is free on the side streets. The operator warns off the spots marked two-hour, which do not cover a visit this long. Public transit reaches the area.

Two clocks matter here. The operator asks everyone to arrive 35 to 45 minutes early, and counts anyone who turns up with less than 20 minutes to spare as a no-show. Fold the parking hunt into that window.

Refunds on this reservation follow the booking page: cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund, and the operator can call the tour off for weather. The operator's own desk works on a 48-hour window and charges USD 15 per kayak to move a booking inside it.

Wear something you will not mind soaking. A swimsuit or shorts and a shirt, sandals or water shoes for the walk down, a hat, sunscreen. Leave the rest in a locker.

📍 The shop is at 2222 Avenida de la Playa, open 9:00 AM to sunset, seven days a week. By the time the lesson on the sand is done, the only thing left to settle is whether the ocean lets you inside a cave.
