Two Hours Driving Cascade Lava Trails to Skylight Cave

Two hours into the Santiam Pass trail system, with one stop where you can climb down into a lava tube.

Drive a RZR on lava trails to Skylight Cave.

The staging area sits on gravel five and a half miles west of Sisters, where Highway 242 begins its climb toward McKenzie Pass. There is no office and no parking lot, only trailers and storage containers at a bend in Forest Road 1510.

Every rider meets at that spot, and the operator runs no hotel pickup. Getting there is part of your own planning. Octane Adventures runs these trips under a special use permit from the Deschutes National Forest, and two hours later the route ends on the same gravel.

Each vehicle is a four-seat Polaris RZR XP1000, and the price covers the machine rather than the seat. One reservation can take up to fifteen riders across several vehicles. A guide leads every departure, and DOT helmets and goggles come with it.

The One Stop Where You Get Out

Skylight Cave is a lava tube, and the route pauses there for about ten minutes. Collapses in the roof let daylight fall through in narrow columns, which is where the name comes from.

Going down into the cave is offered rather than required, and riders who stay above ground wait with the vehicles. Ten minutes is enough to walk in, look up, and come back out.

Red Cinder, Old Lava, and the Peaks

The ground changes colour several times in two hours. Trails run over red cinder and forest floor, then alongside the broken edge of the Belknap lava flow, inside the Santiam Pass trail system.

The flow is a field of loose black rock with standing dead trees in it, and the trail follows its wall rather than crossing it. Mount Washington and the Three Sisters stay in view on a clear day. Two hours buys the closest of these viewpoints; the operator sends riders who want the black sand dunes, the alpine lakes or the summit of Cache Mountain to its four-hour tour instead.

The Freight Road That Came First

Part of the route runs near the old Santiam Wagon Road, a freight line that carried goods between the Willamette Valley and Central Oregon before the modern highways.

The operator's route notes also place an early toll station along this stretch, where travellers once paid for passage and could buy food, lodging and supplies. Nothing along it is staged for visitors.

Who Should Think Twice

The operator rates the ride as suitable for all physical fitness levels. The machines have automatic transmission and power steering, and no prior off-road experience is expected of anyone in the group.

Three cautions sit against it: the ride is not recommended for travellers with spinal injuries, for pregnant travellers, or for anyone with poor cardiovascular health. Drivers need a valid licence on them for the whole ride, and the operator sets the driver minimum at 21, rising to 25 when anyone under 18 rides along. The Forest Service patrols this trail system as public road. Passengers only need to be tall enough for a standard seatbelt, roughly 45 to 48 inches, and there is no upper age limit.

Confirmation is instant, and booking closes eight hours before the departure time. A full refund is available up to twenty-four hours ahead. The standard damage waiver is included; a refundable deposit of USD 3,000 is held against the vehicle, and an upgraded waiver sold on site lowers that figure to USD 1,500.

Bring a card that can carry the hold, and dress for dust. From Sisters, drive west on Highway 242 for 5.5 miles, turn left on Trout Creek Butte Road, follow the pavement 0.7 miles, then take the immediate right onto Forest Road 1510 where the gravel starts.
