Try Dowsing Rods at Safety Harbor's Elf Tree After Dark

A 90-minute night walk through downtown Safety Harbor's history and true crime, with a hands-on ghost-hunting sampler near the end.

Safety Harbor is a small coastal town on Tampa Bay, and this walk covers its downtown after 8:00 PM. Founder Cynthia Dominick leads it, and the operator lists the material as local history and true crime: a hanging tree, a devastating fire, a bank robbery and a funeral home. The fire is on record: the city fire department's history says a 1917 blaze destroyed most of Main Street. The operator states it plainly: no costumes, no actors and no scripted jump scares. It also says it has logged unexplained firetruck activity near City Hall since 2021, and it presents that as documented and leaves the verdict to each guest.

Departures are 8:00 PM on select nights and run about 90 minutes on foot. Check-in is on the sidewalk in front of Gigglewaters on Main Street. Ages 13 and up, and an adult has to make the booking.

Expect More Town History Than Ghost Lore

The route includes a stop inside the Safety Harbor Resort and Spa lobby and its History Hall, which the operator describes as a collection of historic photographs documenting the town's past. On select evenings the group also steps into Rocking Delicious, a candy store at 101 Main Street. The historical marker listed at that address, erected by the Community Redevelopment Agency and the Safety Harbor Museum of Regional History, says the building opened as the St. James Hotel on March 6, 1925. Guest accounts follow the same balance. A February 2025 guest wrote that "the spirits were quiet" that night and the group still learned a lot about the area, and a three-star review from March 2024 wanted more background on the ghosts themselves. Book it for the history and the true crime, and treat any paranormal moment as a bonus.

Dowsing Rods and a Spirit Box at the Elf Tree

Near the end of the walk the group stops at the Elf Tree for a short ghost-hunting sampler. The kit is dowsing rods, a spirit box, cat balls and a flashlight experiment, and the operator supplies all of it. The operator's own line on the sampler: whatever happens is yours to interpret. The listing also includes a stop at the Baranoff Oak, which it puts at 300 to 500 years old. The city's parks page says it is believed to be the oldest live oak in Pinellas County and estimates its age at approximately 350 years. One rule to know before raising a phone: the operator does not permit audio or video recording, or live streaming, of guides while they present.

Ages, Pace and Access

The operator sets the floor at 13 for mature content, true crime included, and advises parental discretion for younger guests. Both the listing and the operator ask that guests can walk just over a mile at a leisurely pace. The operator also asks everyone to arrive sober, and suggests comfortable walking shoes and clothes for the weather. The listing marks the route as wheelchair accessible, and the operator's FAQ asks guests with accessibility questions to contact it in advance.

Planning Around Halloween and the Weather

As of October 22, 2026, neither the booking calendar nor the operator's own calendar lists a walk on October 31. Other nights that week are listed, and dates are loaded through late December. On October 30, the city's Main Street Trick-or-Treat runs from 4:30 to 6:30 PM, ahead of an 8:00 PM start, and the city calendar notes that Main Street will be closed to vehicle traffic from Bayshore Blvd. to 9th Ave. The operator says tours run rain or shine. This booking can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before the 8:00 PM start. Bottled water and tips are not included.

📍 Meet on the sidewalk in front of Gigglewaters, 737 Main Street. The operator asks for arrival 10 minutes early and leaves on time. The city says downtown public parking is free, on the street and in public lots; where posted, parking on Main Street between 1st and 10th Avenues is limited to two hours, so if dinner and the walk will run longer, use a public lot. Cynthia's own restaurant picks for Safety Harbor come with the walk, ready for a late dinner in town.
