Trail Ridge Road, Told by Your Phone as You Drive
A self-guided app tour of Rocky Mountain National Park. Stories, stop tips and turn calls play from your phone's GPS as you drive.
Your guide on this drive is an app on your phone. GuideAlong, listed on the booking page as GuideAlong (GyPSy Guide), sells it as a self-guided audio driving tour of Rocky Mountain National Park, and your phone's GPS decides when each of its 135 audio points plays. The route runs between Estes Park on the east side and Grand Lake on the west, over Trail Ridge Road, with shorter drives to Bear Lake and up Old Fall River Road. The operator lists both directions, east to west and west to east.
One purchase covers everyone in the vehicle, and the audio has no expiry date. The listing also offers trip planners for a half day, a full day or several days.

From Estes Park, the narration begins as you approach either the Fall River or the Beaver Meadows entrance. From Grand Lake, it starts on Highway 34 as you drive toward the park's entrance station; inside the park, the highway becomes Trail Ridge Road. After booking, search your email for "Download Audio Tour" and preview the route in the app before you set off.

Trail Ridge Road carries most of this tour. The park service calls it the highest continuous paved road in the United States: 48 miles one way, climbing to 12,183 feet. The operator says about 11 miles of it run above the treeline and puts the drive between Estes Park and Grand Lake at about two hours one way, before stops.
The listing steers you to Many Parks Curve, where a curved boardwalk looks out toward Longs Peak, and to the Tundra Communities Trailhead. The listing puts the Mushroom Rocks roughly a mile's walk from that trailhead, at over 12,000 feet, where you may need short rests to catch your breath. At the top, the Alpine Visitor Center sits at 11,796 feet. On the west side, the Holzwarth Historic Site tells the story of a German immigrant family who built a dude ranch in the Kawuneeche Valley. A traveler in August 2023 listened both ways over Trail Ridge Road and heard different stories in each direction.
Bear Lake Road Stays Open All Year

The shorter drive on the east side is Bear Lake Road, which the park service keeps open year-round. It runs 9.2 paved miles, climbing from 8,200 feet near the Beaver Meadows Entrance to 9,475 feet at the Bear Lake trailhead.
The listing calls the walk around Bear Lake a leisurely stroll with mountain views in all directions. Sprague Lake, on the same road, gets an easy, mostly flat 0.8-mile loop with boardwalks and bridges, and it gets busy. Watch for elk on the drive up, the listing adds.
In the 2026 season, driving onto Bear Lake Road between 5 a.m. and 6 p.m. took a separate Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road reservation, from May 22 to October 18. In winter and spring, expect snow and ice on the road. Colorado's traction law can come into force at any time, and it requires properly rated tires or an approved traction device such as chains.
It Plays From GPS, Offline, Once It Is Downloaded
Clips play automatically from your phone's GPS position, whichever direction you are driving, with stories, stop tips and turn directions. Audio runs through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, or over Bluetooth to the car stereo, while the map stays on the phone.
Download the tour on Wi-Fi before you reach the entrance; once it is on the phone, no cell signal is needed. The operator puts the download at about 71 MB, and the listing suggests packing a USB-C car charger. A traveler in June 2025 ran it with the phone in airplane mode and noted the heavy battery use.
Not every report is smooth. A July 2026 reviewer could not get the app to find their location on Fall River Road or Trail Ridge Road. In its public reply, GuideAlong called that very uncommon and pointed to location permissions, device settings or a tour that had not fully downloaded.
Check the Road Before You Drive It
Trail Ridge Road is a summer road. The park service says it historically opens in late May. In 2026 it opened for the season on May 29, and in 2025 it closed for the season on November 14. On October 23, 2026, the park closed it at 5 p.m. between Many Parks Curve and the Colorado River Trailhead for snow, low visibility and freezing temperatures. As of October 30, 2026, that notice was still posted.
A November 2025 reviewer found that the narration did not flag seasonal closures, so call the park's recorded Trail Ridge Road status line, 970-586-1222, before you set out. Old Fall River Road opens to vehicles from early July to early October, runs one way uphill on an unpaved surface, and is closed to vehicles over 25 feet and to trailers.
In 2026, entering the park between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. from May 22 to October 12 required a timed entry reservation, sold only on Recreation.gov with a USD 2 processing fee. Arriving before 9 a.m. or after 2 p.m. needed no general timed entry reservation; Bear Lake Road kept its own 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. requirement, covered above.
📍 The map pin marks Beaver Meadows Visitor Center on US 36, on the approach to the Beaver Meadows Entrance, one of the two east-side starts the listing names. The tour itself has no meeting point.
Park entry is not part of this purchase. A private vehicle pays USD 30 for one day or USD 35 for seven days. Non-US residents aged 16 and over add USD 100 each, unless the car enters on an annual or America the Beautiful pass. The USD 250 non-resident America the Beautiful pass covers the whole private vehicle.
For a full refund through Viator, cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time on your booking. The audio itself has no expiry. One traveler in October 2026 went in at the Beaver Meadows entrance at 8 a.m., drove up to the Alpine Visitor Center, and came back down to Sheep Lakes to watch elk in the evening.
