Description

The 15-foot statue was sculpted by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, set on an architectural base and platform designed by Henry Bacon. Dedicated in 1931, the monument captures a male figure in a pose recalling the crucifixion to commemorate the band members, engineers, and officers lost in the 1912 disaster. Initially placed near the Lincoln Memorial, it was relocated in 1968 to 4th and P Streets, SW, near Fort McNair.
