Description

Created in 1980, the 1,079-acre refuge was specifically established to protect and conserve threatened and endangered wildlife, notably to help save the light-footed Ridgway’s rail. The grounds form part of the larger 2,800-acre Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve—one of only 30 protected estuarine areas in the United States—extending safeguards across the area's vulnerable fish, plants, and native habitats.
