Description

The grounds take their name from the waterway that once relied on wooden locks to move goods and materials to and from sea-going ships. That route was abandoned in 1886 after an aqueduct bridge failed, made permanently obsolete by railroads and powered tugboats. Though privately owned, the site remains part of the publicly accessible linear park system along Alexandria’s waterfront.
