Through Robinson Preserve's Mangroves by Clear Kayak, Toward Tampa Bay

Two guided hours in a clear tandem kayak, through a restored Bradenton mangrove preserve and out toward Tampa Bay.

Robinson Preserve sits on the west edge of Bradenton, a few minutes from Anna Maria Island. By the operator's account it was farmland until the late 2000s, and the restoration since has turned it into more than 650 acres of mangrove swamp, mud flats, tidal creeks and beach. This tour spends two hours paddling it in clear tandem kayaks with a guide from Get Up and Go Kayaking.

The route leaves the launch at the preserve's north entrance and works through the mangroves and under wooden footbridges toward Tampa Bay. The operator says the water gets clearer the closer the group gets to the bay. Groups top out at 10 paddlers, and the guide talks through the birds, fish and plants along the way.

The booking below covers the kayak, paddles, life jackets and one dry bag per kayak; a child 30 pounds or under needs their own life jacket. As of October 30, 2026, the booking calendar showed departures at 9:00 AM, 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM.

How Much the Clear Hull Shows

A clear hull only helps when the water under it is clear, and here that changes from day to day. The operator names weather, tides, rain, restoration work, boat traffic and wildlife among the things that shift the water's color, and says it cannot guarantee visibility. Two reviewers, in August 2024 and August 2026, wrote that the water was too dark for the clear kayak to make much difference. Others came back with a long list: one April 2026 paddler counted two manatees, egrets, snook, a turtle and an osprey.

If seeing into the water matters most to you, the operator asks you to call and talk through current conditions before you pick a time. The listing says wildlife sightings are always a hope, never a promise. Spotted eagle rays, dolphins and manatees all turn up here, just not on every trip.

The Sandbar and the Five-Story Tower

The listing builds the paddle toward two stops on land. When conditions allow, the group climbs out on a sandbar to get into the shallows; in August 2026 one reviewer got out a couple of times to look at crabs and snails. The operator ties the sandbar stop to conditions, and one 2024 reviewer was never offered the swim.

The other stop is the preserve's observation tower, which the operator puts at 53 feet and five stories. From the top it lists Tampa Bay, Anna Maria Island, St. Petersburg and the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, and reviewers from 2024 and 2026 describe ending their tour up there. The listing suggests letting the guide take your photo at the top.

Two Paddlers to a Kayak, and a Weight Limit

Every kayak is a tandem. A party with an odd number of paddlers gets one kayak set up as a single, which is also how the operator takes solo paddlers. No paddler can be over 250 pounds, and two people in one kayak cannot total more than 425. The operator says the limit comes from the kayak manufacturer, applies to a kayak paddled as a single too, and cannot be exceeded. The booking listing does not mention it.

The listing rates the tour suitable for all fitness levels. The operator says wind, tides and weather change how hard the paddle is, and an adult paddling with a child, or anyone paddling alone, needs moderate fitness because that person does all the work. A December 2025 reviewer called it peaceful but hard work for anyone not used to paddling. The listing also marks the tour as not recommended for travelers who are pregnant or have spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health.

Kids, Life Jackets and the Fifteen-Minute Rule

Children from age 3 up can join; there is no option for younger children on this tour. One adult needs to come for every child 14 and under, guests aged 15 to 17 also need an adult present to sign waivers, and the operator notes that children 6 and under are required by law to wear a life jacket on the water. The operator supplies life jackets only for children over 30 pounds, so a smaller child needs their own Coast Guard-approved one.

Plan to arrive 15 minutes early for the mandatory paddle safety and skills briefing. The operator says it cannot hold a departure, and a late arrival counts as a no-show. Put sunscreen on at home or as soon as you park: the operator does not allow it right before or during the tour because it damages the clear kayaks. Alcohol and smoking are not permitted. Pets stay home; service dogs are allowed, and the operator asks you to call ahead about one.

🚗 The launch is at the preserve's north entrance, 1704 99th St NW, Bradenton. Drive past the kayak launch on your right, park free in the lot on your left, and walk down to the launch to meet your guide.

Cancel at least 24 hours before the start for a full refund; inside 24 hours there is none, and a weather cancellation brings a new date or a full refund. Then it is two hours of mangrove shade, the bay opening up ahead, and whatever happens to swim under the hull.
