Three Midtown Ceilings to Look Up At, From Library to Cathedral
A grand reading room, a starry rail vault and a 2,400-seat Gothic nave, three Midtown interiors that reward a slow look up.
📍 Three Rooms, One Walk
📚 The Library's Grand Rooms
Start at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. Past the lions, the library opens into Beaux-Arts halls and grand reading rooms, and admission is free. Linger in the Treasures exhibition, where the original Winnie-the-Pooh stuffed animals sit among a Gutenberg Bible and Ottoman illuminated manuscripts. Docent-led tours explain the building, and weekday doors open at 10:00 AM.

🌌 The Terminal's Starry Vault
Walk east to the rail hub and look straight up at the vaulted celestial ceiling above the main hall, then find the massive Tiffany clock. Keep exploring through Vanderbilt Hall and the Whispering Gallery on the way to the lower level. Doors run daily from 5:15 AM to 2:00 AM, the easiest stop on this walk to fit around a busy day.

🕯️ The Cathedral Nave on Fifth
Finish back on Fifth Avenue, opposite Rockefeller Center, at North America's largest Gothic Revival cathedral. Designed by James Renwick Jr. and opened in 1879, the nave seats roughly 2,400 and holds a 7,855-pipe Gallery Organ. As an active church it stays freely open to walk through, light a candle or sit for a quiet minute. Keep voices low around services.
