Three Manhattan Galleries to See in One Afternoon
Three Manhattan galleries can fill one afternoon if you work around their hours. Expect interactive media art, a civic lens on human rights and the law, and working artist studios, with weekday and weekend openings that rarely line up.
Downtown to Midtown Gallery Stops
Digital Art Downtown
bitforms gallery has followed media art since 2001, from early experiments to the digital, internet and time-based work shown now. The roster runs from emerging artists to established names, and the room is small, so the exhibitions read closer to how each piece was built than to any survey of the field. Hours are Tuesday through Sunday, from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Start downtown, then head uptown.

A Civic Lens
Anya and Andrew Shiva Gallery is open to the public. Visiting hours run Monday through Friday, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The address is 860 Eleventh Avenue. John Jay College's main gallery presents contemporary art exploring social justice, human rights, and the law. Artist talks, screenings, and performances accompany the exhibitions. These events explore political and reconstructive themes. Those weekday-only hours fit a Wednesday-to-Friday run, when all three stops are open.

Textile District Workspaces
Group exhibitions at EFA Project Space share the program with talks and cross-disciplinary performances. The address is 323 West 39th Street. The gallery occupies the second floor. Regular hours run Wednesday through Saturday, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. On a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, leave enough time to reach this last stop before the 6:00 PM close. Visitors can see artists working inside their studios during Open Studios events.
