Three Flights Up on East Short Street, Lexington Lies Down

Crystal bowls, gongs and a handpan fill a brick-walled studio while you lie under a blanket and do nothing at all.

Settle into a sound bath on East Short Street.

Sound baths are still rare in Kentucky, and this one happens on the third floor of a building on East Short Street. The room is long, with exposed brick, timber posts holding up the ceiling, and a string of small bulbs overhead.

Mats, blankets and pillows are laid out before anyone arrives. The entire practice is lying still for ninety minutes while someone else plays. You are not working toward anything, and there is no sequence to follow.

Where your body goes is the one decision the session asks of you. Floor mats run down the middle of the room. Hammock chairs hang from the beams along the brick wall, and zero-gravity chairs sit reclined beside them.

Sessions run ninety minutes and cost USD 39 a person, the same price across every age band on the listing. Three slots run each week: Sunday at 5:30 PM, Tuesday and Wednesday at 11:00 AM.

Blankets, pillows and mats are provided. Booking closes two hours before the start time.

Whoever Is Leading Brings Their Own Instruments

The center runs a rotating roster. What you hear depends on who is on the schedule that day.

Amy Hudson founded the place and plays quartz crystal singing bowls. Peter Wallace is a handpan player who found his way to the instrument through a steel tongue drum tuned to B Celtic Minor. Meredith Pritchett works with bronze singing bowls, ocean drums, rain sticks and rattles. Alicia and Ryan McNaughton co-lead the monthly full moon ceremonies.

Two sessions a week apart can sound nothing alike. Crystal bowls turn up most often. Gongs, rain drums and rattles come and go with the facilitator.

Several Stairs to the Door, Then Three Floors Up

Settle this one before you pay. The studio sits on the third floor of a historic building, several stairs lead up to the front door, and there is no elevator anywhere inside. The operator states it on her own site and the booking page repeats it in capitals.

It has caught someone out. A guest who booked in September 2025 could not manage the stairs and wrote that the ticket details had not reached her until after the free cancellation window closed. The owner answered publicly that she would have refunded the booking.

Go in through the large wooden door on the front of the building, then up to Suite 320 at the back. Parking is free in front and in the lot across Short Street.

The address has held people who needed care before. In 1888 the Women's Guild of Christ Church Episcopal opened an infirmary here that became Good Samaritan, Lexington's second hospital. It moved to South Limestone in 1907.

Ninety Minutes With Nothing to Do

You arrive to a dimly lit room and pick a spot. Once everyone has settled, the facilitator talks the room through a few slow breaths. Then the playing starts.

Some sessions draw on one or two instruments. Others layer several at once, rising and then settling onto a single sustained note. People report warmth, heavy limbs, vivid imagery, or tension they had not noticed letting go.

Time does strange things. One guest wrote in June 2026 that the ninety minutes "seemed like 30-35". The session closes gently and leaves you a few minutes before you rejoin the street.

Before You Book

One booking covers up to eight people. The room itself takes up to thirty, which is also the ceiling the operator sets for private bookings. A guest who came in May 2025 described the room as "full but not crowded".

  • Minimum age is 13, and an adult has to be on the booking
  • The booking page says service animals are allowed
  • The operator does not recommend the session for travelers with mobility limitations
  • Cancel at least 24 hours ahead for a full refund; inside 24 hours nothing is returned
  • Dress for lying down, and go easy on heavy meals and caffeine beforehand

Confirmation is instant. The slot is yours the moment the booking goes through.

A Sunday session ends at 7:00 PM, which leaves the evening still ahead of you. Tuesday and Wednesday sessions finish by 12:30 PM, in time for lunch somewhere on Short Street.

Either way you come down the three flights lighter than you went up, and the rest of the day belongs to you.
