Thirty Private Minutes on a Warm Crystal Mat in Gloucester

Half an hour lying clothed on a heated PEMF mat in a Main Street wellness studio, booked one adult at a time.

Settle in for a warm crystal mat session in Gloucester.

The booking is titled as a day spa activity, and its one-line description promises a full-body table massage. The itinerary underneath describes something else: a 30-minute PEMF session, short for pulsed electromagnetic frequency, taken lying on a mat. The supplier's own photo matches the itinerary, showing a mat of small stone tiles laid on a treatment table under a padded cover.

Revive Wellness, which runs it, is a woman-owned studio that took over the old Animal Krackers storefront on Main Street in 2024, and its owner, Roxanne Costello, came to it from the legal profession. Its website menu lists PEMF therapy, hydromassage, massage chairs and a compression massage system, and no hands-on massage. Expect to lie still and fully clothed on the mat; neither the itinerary nor the studio's PEMF page describes anyone working on you.

The listing sells one adult, aged 18 to 90, per booking, Wednesday through Sunday. Every sale is final, so read the health exclusions further down before you pay.

Front Door on Main Street, Wednesday to Sunday

Check-in is at the front door of 232 Main Street. The listing asks you to walk in and be checked in there, and the session ends at the same address.

The listing's hours run 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM Wednesday through Saturday and 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Sunday, and it sells nothing on Monday or Tuesday. Online booking for a given day closes an hour before that day's closing time, and each booking is confirmed by hand, so the confirmation is not instant.

Lockers are on site, and the studio says it also has a restroom and a changing room. For the PEMF mat, its own advice is that no special clothing is needed.

Half an Hour Inside a Harbor Day

Thirty minutes leaves most of a Gloucester day free. On a Sunday the session has to land before the 2:00 PM close, which makes it a morning or early-lunch booking.

Without a car, the Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail line runs from Boston's North Station to Gloucester in a little over an hour, and the city's HarborWalk guide calls the Gloucester depot a short walk from Main Street. Drivers pay at meters and kiosks or through the Flowbird app, and there are public lots at St. Peter's Square and on Rogers Street.

On the waterfront, the Fisherman's Memorial on Stacy Boulevard sets Leonard Craske's bronze helmsman at the wheel above a granite base cut with "They that go down to the sea in ships, 1623-1923." A warm mat after a cold walk along the harbor is the order this booking suits.

What the Studio Says Is Inside the Mat

Revive Wellness describes the mat in hardware terms on its PEMF page: eight copper coils, a programmable signal in square or sine waves from 1 to 30 Hz at up to 3,000 milli-gauss, far-infrared heat from a layer of amethyst, tourmaline, obsidian, jade and quartz, and 60 red lights at 660 nanometers.

The same page frames its list of health benefits as things the therapy "is believed to offer." The listing goes further, promising better cellular energy, less inflammation and faster healing. Nothing here confirms those medical claims, so book the half hour for warmth and stillness and treat the health promises as the seller's.

Who Should Skip It, and Why There Is No Refund

The listing rules the session out for anyone pregnant and for anyone with an implanted electrical device, naming cardiac pacemakers, cardiac stents, insulin and other medicine pumps, aneurysm clips or coils, deep brain or vagus nerve stimulators and cochlear implants. It also excludes bullet fragments and any magnetic implant or metal object in the body, and it flags poor cardiovascular health.

All sales are final, with no refund for a cancellation, so check that list before paying. Only adults from 18 to 90 can book.

The listing ticks every wheelchair box, yet the same checklist says a stroller is fine for a booking that sells no child tickets, and none of the studio's website pages mentions wheelchairs, steps or ramps. Ask about access when the confirmation comes through.

Walk in the front door at 232 Main Street and say you are booked for the PEMF mat. Gratuity is not included in the price. Then lie back, keep your clothes on, and let the heat carry the half hour.
