Thirteen Miles Through Red Rock Canyon on a 50cc Scooter

A guided lap of Red Rock's one-way scenic drive, on a 50cc scooter you practice in an empty parking lot first.

Plan a scooter ride through Red Rock Canyon.

Red Rock Canyon sits west of the Las Vegas Strip, and its scenic drive runs one way for thirteen miles through banded sandstone. Most visitors see all of it through a windshield. On a scooter the canyon arrives at eye level, with nothing between you and the rock but a helmet strap. The group rides in a line behind a guide and pulls into the paved overlooks along the route, where the guide talks through the geology, the history and the wildlife.

The scooters are SYM Mio 50s, and the operator puts their comfortable pace at around 25 miles per hour. One rider per scooter, with no second seat in use. A support van trails the group the whole way, so anyone who decides partway that they have had enough finishes the loop from a passenger seat. A second guide drives it.

Someone Else Handles the Timed Entry

From October 1 through May 31, the scenic drive requires a timed entry reservation between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Slots open thirty days ahead at 7:00 AM Pacific, with a second batch two days out. A vehicle has to be through the fee station by 8:00 AM to get in without one. Booking a guided ride takes that off your calendar, and the canyon entrance fee is already inside the price.

A Parking Lot Comes First

Nobody gets handed a scooter and pointed at the canyon. The ride starts in an open lot with no traffic, where the guides run a lesson on the controls and the braking and keep each rider there until they can handle the machine. Confident balance on a two-wheeled bicycle is the real gate, and it turns away more people than the driver's license does.

The Road Is One Way and Shared

Cars and cyclists use the same paved lane you do, and the whole loop runs in one direction. The scooters stay on pavement for its full length. Closing time moves with the season, from 5:00 PM in the winter months out to 8:00 PM between April and September.

Before You Book

The operator applies its requirements at the curb.

  • A full driver's license from your state or country. Learner permits and provisional licenses are turned away.
  • Riders are 18 to 65 years old, and anyone under 21 needs an adult along.
  • A height of 5 feet 2 inches, so both feet reach the ground.
  • A 240 pound limit per scooter, set by the manufacturer.
  • Closed-toe shoes with laces or straps. Flip-flops and slip-on flats are refused.

Helmets come with the scooter and wearing one is not optional. The tour also needs a minimum number of riders to run, so a thin booking can be moved or refunded.

Pickup starts an hour before the tour does. The shuttle works down the Strip from north to south, so Treasure Island boards first, then Bellagio, then Excalibur, and the company confirms your stop by email once it has your hotel name. If your hotel never got recorded, the default stop is Treasure Island. Cancelling 24 hours or more ahead returns the full fare. The 9:00 AM group is usually back at the hotel by 12:30 PM, with the whole Vegas afternoon still in front of you.
