Theis Attaway Nature Center
4.4 (189)park
A four-acre park centered on an old iron ore pit turned wildlife pond, with shaded walking trails and a walk-out pier.
Description

The water traces back to highway construction in the 1950s, when iron ore was dug out to widen State Highway 249 before becoming a family swimming hole. Today, the habitat features special wildlife islands for migratory birds and aquatic vegetation added to support fish and wildlife. Beside the pond, a grassy amphitheater with three stone tiers frames a compact stage used for outdoor educational programs and small groups. A quarter-mile asphalt loop wraps through the grounds, passing shaded picnic areas on land first settled by the Theis family in 1846.
