The Tomb Guard's Twenty-One Steps, With Your Own DC Guide

A private four-hour minibus tour past DC's memorials that saves ninety minutes for Arlington and the changing of the guard.

Plan a private DC day with time at Arlington.

This is a private tour for your own party, with a guide and a minibus that pick you up at your hotel or another address inside the DC area. Over four hours the written plan takes in the White House from Lafayette Square, the Capitol's west front, the main memorials on the National Mall and ninety minutes inside Arlington National Cemetery. The operator calls it a customized visit: tell the guide what matters most and the order gets built around it.

📍 Pricing is per group: one price covers a booking of up to ten travelers, so a solo traveler pays the same as a party of ten. Hotel pickup and drop-off, bottled water, onboard WiFi and phone charging are included. Gratuities are not.

Ninety Minutes at Arlington, Mostly on Foot

Cars and buses generally cannot drive through Arlington National Cemetery, so this part of the day is on foot. The listing puts the walk to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at about 25 minutes. It also calls the tour suitable for all fitness levels, while the cemetery's own guidance is that its 639 acres of distances and hills take moderate physical exertion.

The guard changes every hour on the hour from October 1 through March 31, and every half hour from April 1 through September 30. Between changes, a Sentinel of the 3rd U.S. Infantry walks exactly 21 steps along the black mat, turns and holds for 21 seconds, turns again for 21 more, then walks back. Anyone who would rather skip the climb can ask for the Marine Corps War Memorial instead, the bronze flag raising on Iwo Jima.

Where the Guide Walks With You, and Where You Go Alone

The listing promises a guide who escorts you to each site unless parking is not available. Travelers bear that out: one notes the operator is limited by where commercial vehicles can drive and park, another was disappointed the guide could not come along to the monuments, and a solo traveler was given directions on where to meet back at Arlington.

Treat each stop as a timed window. Twenty minutes at Lafayette Square across from the White House, fifteen on the Capitol's west front, where most inaugurations since 1981 have taken place, and fifteen at each of the Mall memorials. The White House is seen from outside, and the listing notes its interior is not open to the public.

Morning Starts Fit the Cemetery's Clock

Departures on the booking calendar run from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM, and Arlington National Cemetery closes at 5:00 PM daily. In the written plan its ninety minutes come only after nearly two hours of earlier stops, so a 2:00 PM start, the earliest in the afternoon, would hit closing time partway through the visit. On an afternoon start, ask the guide to take Arlington first. Weather can change the day too. One traveler found Arlington closed for a storm and saw it only from the road.

Pickup, Languages and Wheelchair Limits

Pickup can be your hotel or another address inside the DC area, given when you book. Guiding is offered in English, Spanish and Portuguese. The operator says its minibuses have no hydraulic wheelchair lift and staff cannot handle wheelchairs, though a transport chair can be accommodated. Eating, drinking and smoking are not allowed inside the vehicle, so eat before pickup. Two travelers' advice for the Arlington walk is the same: stay hydrated. Free cancellation runs until 24 hours before departure.

🛂 Arlington is a military installation, every visitor goes through security screening, and visitors 18 and older, tour groups included, may be asked for photo ID depending on the security posture. If you are not a U.S. citizen, carry your passport; it is accepted ID if you are asked. Bags are best kept small. The written plan ends at the Air Force Memorial, three stainless steel spires facing the Pentagon's west side.
