The Road Up Mount Lemmon, Narrated While You Drive It
A GPS-cued audio guide for your own drive up Mount Lemmon, with stories timed to the overlooks and room to stop wherever you like.
The guide on this tour is your phone. You book the Mount Lemmon route here, unlock it in the Action Tour Guide app, download it on Wi-Fi in Tucson, and drive the Catalina Highway yourself while each story plays as GPS brings you near the place it describes.

One purchase covers everyone in the car, and the listing grants lifetime access with no expiry. The booking asks for a date, but the redemption notes say the tour works on any date.

The listing asks you to finish setup before you reach the mountain. After booking, an email and a text from Action Tour Guide carry a password. Install the app, sign in with your email, enter that password under My Tours, and download the tour while you still have Wi-Fi or a strong signal.
Once downloaded, the tour runs on GPS with no cell service needed, and travelers report losing signal on the way up. A February 2026 traveler wrote that it worked flawlessly without cell service. The app needs an iPhone on iOS 15 or later or an Android phone on version 9 or later. Audio plays through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and the map stays on your phone.
Stories Timed to the Pullouts

Low on the route, the listing's stop at Babad Do'ag Scenic Overlook describes saguaros, chollas and ocotillos. The route then passes Molino Canyon, climbs past Windy Point, Geology Point Vista and Hoodoo Vista among the rock spires, and reaches Aspen Vista Point at nearly 8,000 feet. The Forest Service says the road has turnouts at its scenic overlooks.
Travelers describe stories that arrive ahead of each stop, with time to decide whether to pull over. A June 2026 traveler wrote that no matter how many stops they made, the narrator picked back up in the exact correct spot. A March 2024 traveler found the timing right on, especially when driving below the speed limit. A May 2024 traveler had the app name a pullout just as they passed it.
A Highway Prisoners Helped Build
The Forest Service tells the road's own story. Work on what was first called the General Hitchcock Highway began in 1933 and finished in 1950, and much of the labor came from a federal prison camp set up at the base of the mountain for that purpose. The listing's stories also take in the Catalina Federal Honor Camp and Tohono O'odham history.
The audio ends beside the Mount Lemmon SkyCenter, which the listing says began as a government radar station in 1956. The SkyCenter's stargazing programs are sold separately, and the listing asks you to check its admission rules before you go.
Winter Can Cut the Last Miles
In winter, the audio's last stop may be out of reach. The Forest Service says the access road beyond Mount Lemmon Ski Valley is closed in winter, and the tour ends past that point, beside the SkyCenter. A March 2025 traveler found that last leg closed and turned around at the ski area. Before heading up, call the Pima County Sheriff's road condition hotline at (520) 351-3351.
The listing puts the drive at 2 to 3 hours for more than 30 miles, and the operator's own page says 3 to 4 hours. A January 2026 traveler took about 3 hours at a leisurely pace. Add time for the drive back down, because the Forest Service calls this the only paved road to the mountain's upper reaches.
📍 The suggested start is on the Catalina Highway near 9070 E Catalina Hwy, Tucson. The operator says you should pass a strip mall on your right and see mountains straight ahead, and the listing says you can also join anywhere along the route.
- Forest fees: the Mount Lemmon Recreation Site near the summit charges USD 8 per vehicle for the day or USD 10 for a week. Buy the pass online, or on site with cash or check. America the Beautiful and Coronado National Forest annual passes are honored there and at other sites the Forest Service lists along the road, including Middle Bear picnic area and the Palisades Visitor Center. The tour price does not cover these.
- Fee-free day: the Forest Service waives fees at most day-use sites on Veterans Day, November 11, 2026.
- Rose Canyon Lake: a Forest Service order through April 2029 bars going in or on the water.
- Cancellation: full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before the booked start time.
Bring layers, as the operator advises: the drive starts among saguaros and finishes in pine forest.
