🎬 The Film and the Orchestra

🎼 What the Live Score Adds

Michael Abels wrote the score for the 2017 film, and the Philharmonic plays it from the stage while the picture runs above. The opening titles belong to the choir. DC6 Singers Collective sings the Swahili chant of Sikiliza Kwa Wahenga, which Abels translates as an order to listen to the ancestors and run, and Anthony Parnther cues those voices from the podium. Strings, harp, woodwinds and tuned metal percussion move around them through the hypnosis scenes and the last chase.

🎻 Inside the Hall

The Wu Tsai Theater seats 2,200 and keeps the orchestra within reach of every section. The film plays with open captions at all four performances, so the dialogue reads from any seat, and the hall's access team handles requests for other accommodations. After the October 28 screening, Abels and Parnther discuss the score with Phillippa Cole, the Philharmonic's vice president of artistic planning. Once the house goes dark, phones stay out of sight for the length of the film. The Art of the Score pairs features with their scores played live.
