The House of the Seven Gables
4.6 (5,247)museum
This 1668 seaside mansion inspired Hawthorne’s novel and pairs historic timber rooms with lush gardens on Salem Harbor.
Description

Originally built by merchant and ship-owner John Turner, the estate took on its defining mission in 1910, when activist Caroline Emmerton restored the grounds as a museum and settlement house to support Salem's immigrant community. Designated a National Historic Landmark District in 2007, the site continues that dual role today. Visitors can join tours of the historic mansion, attend public programs, and walk the seaside lawn, while the settlement association still provides free citizenship and English language classes on the North Shore.
