The Golden Gate From an Open Van, Then Alcatraz After Lunch
A guide drives up to 12 of you around San Francisco's hills and neighborhoods, then leaves you at the ferry to Alcatraz.
Fogcutter Tours belongs to Eric, its founder and guide, who has led tours since 2010 and started his own company in 2015. The vehicle is his Woody: a Nissan NV van with the windows removed, a canopy overhead and seats for twelve.
The guide drives the city half of the day and does not come onto the island. After about four hours on the road, the group is dropped at Pier 33, and Alcatraz is yours to walk with the ferry ticket and cellhouse audio tour the booking includes.
The open sides are the appeal and the catch. The operator says June, July and August run foggy and colder than visitors expect, and keeps blankets and heavy jackets in the van.

📍 The booking covers hotel pickup, a professional guide, the Alcatraz ticket with the ferry ride out and back, and the audio tour of the cellhouse. Food, drinks and gratuities are not included. The park service says the island has no food service beyond light snacks and bottled water in its bookstores, and eating is allowed only on the dock. One stop on the city loop is for buying lunch.
Every traveler's name is required at booking, and anyone over 18 needs government-issued photo ID to collect the Alcatraz ferry tickets after the city tour. Departures run Tuesday through Saturday on the listing's calendar. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund.

Only two sightseeing stops are fixed. The operator gets everyone out at the Golden Gate Bridge and at a skyline lookout such as Twin Peaks, Tank Hill or Alamo Square. Where you meet the bridge depends on the day, and the listing names the Marin Headlands, Baker Beach and Fort Point, right under the span, as the options.
The rest is drive-through neighborhoods such as Chinatown, North Beach, the Haight-Ashbury, Pacific Heights and the Mission, with short walks when time and interest allow. The day bends to what the group in the van wants. When there is time, the guide likes to add the Fortune Cookie Factory on Ross Alley, the tiled steps on Moraga Street in the Sunset or the Balmy Alley murals.
Pier 33, Then an Afternoon on the Rock

The operator times the drop-off at Pier 33 for the 2:45 PM ferry, and the crossing takes about 15 minutes. On the island, the "Doing Time" audio tour leads you through the cellhouse with stories from former inmates and guards. The listing says it comes in English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Mandarin, Portuguese and Korean.
The listing also says most guests spend two to three hours on the island, with return boats every 30 to 40 minutes and the last one usually leaving at 6:30 PM. Nobody from the tour waits at the pier afterward, and getting back to your hotel is up to you. Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39 are a short walk from the landing.
The Island Closes October 26 to November 18
The National Park Service is closing Alcatraz from October 26 to November 18, 2026 while crews replace two pilings that hold the ferry dock, and it says weather could shift those dates. The tour runs Tuesday through Saturday, so Tuesday, October 27 is the first departure inside the closure, and the listing's calendar has none open from then through November 18. The same dock closed the island for nine days in January and six days in April this year.
Two Steps Up, Car Seats and Layers
The van has no lift or ramp, and the operator says boarding takes two steps up into the seats. A folding wheelchair fits in the back cargo area. The listing says small children can ride in a pram or stroller and calls the tour suitable for all physical fitness levels. The operator's own pages mention neither.
Children under five need a car seat, and the operator asks families to bring one or ask it to arrange one. Dress in layers whatever the forecast. The van's sides stay open all day, and the operator notes that alcohol is not allowed on Alcatraz.
📍 Pickup is from downtown San Francisco hotels, generally between 9:45 AM and 10:15 AM depending on the order of stops, and the operator contacts you the day before with an exact time. Guests at homeshares or outside the pickup area agree a meeting spot with the operator, and hotels outside the city, around SFO for example, are not on the route.
BART riders meet at the Hyatt Regency's front entrance on Drumm Street, between California and Sacramento Streets, above the Embarcadero station, usually 30 minutes before the drivers' pickup. Drivers meet in Fisherman's Wharf, where the operator's own site names the Hotel Riu Plaza and the listing names the Hotel Zephyr. The listing asks every guest to call (415) 323-6180 48 hours ahead to confirm the pickup time and place, and drivers can ask which hotel on that call.
The city half ends at Pier 33, near Fisherman's Wharf, with the boat out to Alcatraz.
