The Ghost-Hunting Tools Come Out in Old Town's Heritage Park

A 90-minute Old Town San Diego walk that mixes ghost stories and history with a hands-on turn at ghost-hunting tools.

This is Haunted San Diego Ghost Tours' Old Town walk with an introductory ghost hunt folded in. Over about 90 minutes and roughly a mile on foot, a host in Victorian dress works through three places: Heritage Park, the outside of the Whaley House, and El Campo Santo, the town's old cemetery, where the walk ends.

The listing splits the time at about 40 percent hands-on investigation and 60 percent ghost stories and history. Tools come with the booking, and the operator's own FAQ says using them is entirely optional. Which devices appear depends on the host. The operator names meters, voice recorders, a spirit box, dowsing rods, a pendulum and a laser grid light among the possibilities, and suggests bringing a phone too.

As of October 22, 2026, the booking calendar sells a 7:00 PM and a 9:00 PM start, with a scattering of dates closed, and stops taking bookings two hours before each one. Ages 1 to 3 go free, everyone 4 and up pays the same rate, and cancelling at least 24 hours ahead brings a full refund.

Inside the Park, Outside Every Door

Heritage Park is a small county park in Old Town set aside to preserve examples of San Diego's Victorian architecture. The listing budgets about 40 minutes here and counts seven stops inside it. The operator says it pays for access to the park and calls itself the only tour allowed in, and it says the time spent there depends on, in its words, "that night's energy."

The group stays on the park's paths and does not go inside any of the houses. A line in the listing about taking guests "inside real haunted locations" refers to the park grounds. The operator's FAQ states plainly that it does not take guests into any building.

The Whaley House From the Sidewalk, Then the Graves

The Whaley House gets about ten minutes, and only from outside. The operator notes that no ghost tour goes in and that the museum runs its own tours. It also says it has picked up less activity there since the house got busier, and it moves on when the stop goes quiet.

The last half hour belongs to El Campo Santo, Old Town's cemetery, and the walk finishes there. The operator's pitch for the cemetery rests on burials that have been disturbed many times. Its own line for this stop is that you might "capture some activity yourself."

Six Guests or No Walk

A departure needs six guests in total, your group included. When a time slot falls short, the operator says it calls or texts three to five hours before the start, and a cancelled booking is refunded in full. Give a phone number you will actually carry.

Children, Strollers and the Hill Out of the Park

The operator calls this its most child-friendly tour and still describes the material as dark history, with hangings and murders in it. Children come along at the parents' discretion. One family that reviewed it in June 2026 said it worked for everyone in a group aged 10 to 66. There are no jump scares, and nobody leaps out at you.

Wheelchairs and walkers are hard work on the slope up and down from Heritage Park, and the listing says to call ahead with a strong helper or a rugged chair. The listing also marks the walk as suitable for all fitness levels and for strollers. The operator's FAQ calls it an easy walk with standing breaks at each stop, while warning about the same hill.

📍 The meeting point is Senlis Cottage, the brown cottage with orange trim that is the first building you see on entering Heritage Park. The listing prints the address as both 2454 and 2460 Heritage Park Row, and the two numbers sit a few steps apart. There is no parking inside the park at night, and the operator warns that nearby spaces fill up, so plan on arriving 20 minutes early. The listing asks for 15, and departures leave on time with no refund for late arrivals. Give the host the name on the booking.

The operator does not read app or email messages and asks guests to text or call the number in the booking details. It builds in no bathroom stops and points guests to the visitor center "on the other side of the square" or a local restaurant beforehand. The county's park page does list public restrooms on the north side of Senlis Cottage, next to the parking circle, but it posts no hours for them, so do not count on them at a 7:00 or 9:00 PM start. Leave food and drinks behind. The walk ends among the graves of El Campo Santo, a short walk downhill from the cottage where it began.
