The French Quarter's Ghost Stories, With the Gore Left In

Voodoo, vampires, Jean Lafitte and the LaLaurie Mansion, told in graphic detail on a guided walk through the French Quarter.

Hear the French Quarter's goriest ghost stories.

Wicked History Tours runs this two-hour walk for adults only, 21 and over, and its listing is blunt about the tone: not for the squeamish or the prudish. The stories cover Voodoo and Marie Laveau, vampire lore and the Casket Girls, the pirate Jean Lafitte, witchcraft, the city's prostitutes, and the murder and mayhem tied to the LaLaurie Mansion.

The operator says each of its guides is a practitioner or initiate in the local witchcraft, Voodoo or vampire communities. It says it tailors each walk to the group, so each one comes out a little different. Reviewers describe guides asking what people want to hear before they set off.

The booking covers the guided walk, plus a look at photos the operator presents as real ghosts caught by guests on past tours. Drinks are not included, but you can carry one along as long as it is not in glass. The walk pauses at a bar where you can buy another and use the restroom. Tips for the guide and the bartenders are on you. One booking takes up to eight travelers, and every one of them has to be 21 or older.

Hands of Fate Is on the Same Block as the Bar

First on the listing's list of stops is Hands of Fate, which it calls the original home of the first Church of Witchcraft. It sits at 521 St. Philip Street, on the same block as the bar where the walk meets. The rest of the list: Voodoo shops, Muriel's Restaurant and Jackson Square, Pirates Alley, the Old Ursuline Convent, several haunted hotels, and the LaLaurie Mansion.

These are private buildings. The group listens from the street; the listing says no walking tour gets inside these homes. Each guide also finishes in a different spot. All of those endings are within a few blocks of the start, and the listing says guides will walk you back.

How Uncensored It Gets

If Mistress G leads your walk, her wooden spoon is part of the act, and the operator's own page warns that guests may get spanked with it. Reviewers bring the spoon up again and again.

One 2023 reviewer put the adults-only rule down to the content of the stories and the liberal use of adult language. Religion is in range too: a 2025 reviewer who wrote that they love the gore still objected to jokes aimed at the Catholic Church. The ghost photos come out as part of the storytelling, and one reviewer called them a bonus.

The Guide Decides the Night

The operator's site profiles four guides: Mistress G, Michael Bill, Yahyah and Miss Mia. Reviews name a few more. The booking page offers a single option and lists no guides, so you meet yours at check-in.

The reviews follow the storyteller more than the stops. Praise goes to guides by name for building the walk around what the group asked for, and the complaints, when they come, are about the guide too.

About a Mile and a Quarter, Rain or Shine

The operator puts the walking at about 1.25 miles at a leisurely pace. A December 2024 reviewer estimated closer to 2.5 and noted that you stand for most of the two hours. Plan on two hours on your feet either way.

The walk runs rain or shine. The operator may cancel with a full refund for severe weather or too few guests. Summer evenings run hot: two reviewers, in June and August, described humid 95-degree nights, so bring water. The listing ticks wheelchair accessible and suitable for all physical fitness levels, while the operator's own site and booking notes say nothing about access. Service animals are allowed; pets are not.

📍 Meet at MRB Bar, 515 St. Philip Street, mid-block between Chartres and Decatur. The booking page says to meet inside; the operator's own check-in note says to look for its Wicked History Tours sign out front, since several tour groups gather on that block.

Its notes ask for 15 to 20 minutes early for check-in, and the walk leaves on the hour without waiting for latecomers. Bring a valid, unexpired ID if you want into the bars along the way. On this booking calendar, walks leave at 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM through November 7, then at 7:00 PM only, with no walk on Christmas Day. Cancel at least 24 hours ahead for a full refund.

Then step off St. Philip Street and let the Quarter's darkest stories take over.
