The Charleston Ghost Walk With a Key to the Provost Dungeon
A 90-minute night walk in Charleston with about twenty minutes inside the Provost Dungeon, where British forces held prisoners.
Bulldog Tours runs this walk at night, and its listing calls it the only dungeon walking tour with access to the Provost Dungeon, in the Old Exchange building, where British forces held prisoners during the American Revolution. Admission is part of the ticket, and about twenty of the ninety minutes are spent inside.
Book it for the dungeon. Several travelers found the rest of the night closer to a history walk than a fright. One traveler in November 2025 called it "more of a history tour with a few stories." Another, in August 2026, brought a husband who had never been on a ghost tour and did not believe in ghosts, and wrote that the dungeon even managed to make him jump.

📍 Tours depart from the Bulldog Tours office at 18 Anson Street. The listing asks travelers to arrive 15 minutes before the start and recommends comfortable walking shoes. Restrooms are in the office; the operator says there are no restroom stops along the route. Parties booked separately who want to walk together should say so early: the listing asks for two hours' notice, the operator's own booking notes ask for at least 24 hours, and without notice the groups may not be kept together.

The itinerary gives the dungeon about twenty minutes. It sits in the Old Exchange building on Broad and East Bay Streets. The listing says British forces ran it as a prison during the American Revolution, that hundreds of prisoners jailed for treason or sedition were held in the building, and that famous pirates and Colonial patriots were once housed in the dungeon. Admission is included, and the listing says Bulldog Tours has exclusive evening access.
Travelers' accounts of the stop differ. One in May 2026 found the dungeon smaller than expected but neat to see. Another, in September 2026, timed the stop at about thirty minutes, mostly standing. The photographs above show a guide talking to a group inside, and the wooden door at the end of the vaults.
Forty Minutes in the French Quarter

The itinerary sets aside about forty minutes for the French Quarter, which the listing describes as one of Charleston's oldest neighborhoods, home to historic homes, churches, graveyards and alleyways. The stories it promises are Charleston ghosts, haunted houses, voodoo and Lowcountry superstitions. It does not name the stops. Bulldog Tours' own FAQ says each guide's route is different and that this tour does not go through a graveyard. Its booking page lists stories of Lowcountry night spirits called Plateyes and Boo Hags, and of the South End Brewery.
Travelers' accounts fill in some of the stops. One in November 2025 enjoyed the ghost stories told in Dueler's Alley, outside St. Philip's cemetery and in the dungeon. Another, in April 2026, remembered a cemetery story about little Sally Ann and a story about a tavern. A traveler in July 2026 counted three haunted locations plus a fair amount of time in the dungeon. Plan on a few stops told at length, not a long list of sites. The photographs above show Philadelphia Alley, also known as Dueler's Alley, and the churchyard of St. Philip's Church, both by day.
Departure Times, Prices and Refunds
As of October 22, 2026, the booking calendar sells two departures a night, at 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM. From October 25 there are no Sunday or Monday departures and none on Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26. The current season runs to November 30. The next season on the calendar opens March 1, 2027. Halloween, Saturday, October 31, has both departures on the calendar, and the operator's FAQ says tours often sell out well in advance.
Adult tickets, for ages 13 and up, are USD 40.50. Child tickets, for ages 4 to 12, are USD 30.50, and children 3 and under go free. Bookings close two hours before departure. Cancel at least 24 hours ahead for a full refund. Inside 24 hours there is no refund. The tour needs at least four participants to run. The listing says it operates in all weather conditions, and its booking terms still allow a departure to be called off for poor weather or too few travelers.
Who It Suits, and the Fine Print on Access
The listing says most travelers can participate and describes the pace as leisurely. The operator's own pages are less uniform. Its booking-page FAQ calls the walk far from strenuous, about 1.5 miles in 1.5 hours. Its website rates it Moderate, with stairs, uneven terrain and time on your feet for the whole tour. One traveler in September 2026 wrote that it is not walking all the time, with several stops where the guide talks about what happened there.
The listing marks the tour as wheelchair and stroller accessible, and service animals are allowed. The operator's booking FAQ is more cautious: it says a wheelchair or stroller can be very difficult on Charleston's 300-year-old cobblestone and slate streets, and that the uneven dungeon floor can be challenging. The Old Exchange's visitor information says the building is handicap accessible, with an elevator to all three floors, and that the Provost Dungeon is the bottom-floor cellar. Guests who are hard of hearing can tell the guide, and the operator says they will get a front-row seat. No alcohol is allowed on the tour. Gratuities are not included and there is no transportation.
📍 Bulldog Tours, 18 Anson Street, Charleston. Arrive 15 minutes before a 7:00 PM or 9:00 PM departure. Show a mobile or paper ticket, one per booking. The guide speaks English. The listing ends the walk on Market Street, and the operator says tours finish near the meeting point in the Historic Market District.
The dungeon stop is inside the Old Exchange at 122 East Bay Street, at the corner of Broad Street. The walk starts at the Anson Street office, not at the Old Exchange. City of Charleston street meters only charge Monday to Saturday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, so a metered space is free at either departure time, though posted signs still apply. The operator's booking notes suggest the garages at 51 Pinckney Street and 90 Cumberland Street and say space is not guaranteed.
