Texas Capitol to Sixth Street, Ghost Stories on Your Phone

A self-guided ghost-story route past Austin's Capitol, historic hotels and Sixth Street, narrated by your own phone.

Nobody leads this ghost tour. You open the operator's site in your phone browser, follow a Google Maps link to each stop and play that stop's track yourself. There is no guide, no staff and no set start time: the tour begins whenever you reach the Texas State Capitol and press play.

The listing counts twelve audio tracks, each with its own background music, and names eight stops between the Capitol and East Fifth Street. The tour itself ends outside Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill on Red River Street.

What you buy is a password. After checkout you return to the operator's site, choose Austin, fill in a short form and receive one password that works on as many phones as you bought tickets, up to fifteen people on one booking. You can unlock it from anywhere, and once activated the tour stays available on your device for seven days, so you can pause and finish later in the week.

Eight Stops and the Story Told at Each

The stories belong to the operator, and the listing previews them stop by stop. At the Capitol the track covers Comanche wars, Civil War executions and political murders. Outside the Governor's Mansion it tells of a Texas Ranger and a Comanche woman said to appear together in the gardens, and Saint Mary Cathedral brings a monk whose spirit, the story goes, still bakes phantom pastries.

On Congress Avenue the Paramount Theatre carries the tale of the Woman in Green, and the Stephen F. Austin Royal Sonesta Hotel gets a 1970s murder in an upper-floor suite. At the Driskill it is a little girl's fall. The route then reaches Maggie Mae's on Sixth Street, named in the telling for a 19th-century madam, and closes at the limestone house linked to Susanna Dickinson, whom the listing calls one of the few survivors of the Alamo.

The operator's FAQ strongly recommends taking the stops in the listed order.

You Hear Every Stop From the Sidewalk

Nothing on this route takes you indoors. The listing asks you to stay in public areas and not enter private buildings, and the operator's FAQ says entry into any location is not included or guaranteed.

Several stops are hotels, a theatre and a bar. Walking into one of them is your own visit, separate from the tour.

Your Phone Is the Guide

Each guest plays the tour on their own internet-connected smartphone, in any phone browser, with no app to install. Plan on a charged phone with data for every person: the tour needs a connection the whole way, and nothing is handed out on site.

  • Headphones are recommended by the operator but not provided; the phone speaker also works.
  • Each track opens in a new browser tab; switch back to the first tab to move on.
  • Turn off content blockers if you can, and reload the page if a track will not play.

Ninety Minutes, Walking or Driving, No Refunds

The listing allows ninety minutes. The operator's FAQ, written for all its cities, puts most tours at about an hour to an hour and a half depending on pace, and the product name offers either walking or driving between stops.

All sales are final, both on this listing and in the operator's own FAQ, so a change of plans does not bring the money back. Support runs by email, and the operator warns that replies can take several days.

The listing ticks the standard wheelchair and stroller boxes, while the operator's FAQ does not address access. It does note that the tracks can also be played later, like an audiobook.

Start on the sidewalk at the Texas State Capitol, 1100 Congress Avenue, and press play once you are there. The final track leaves you outside Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill at 303 Red River Street, a corner the listing describes as part of the city's 19th-century warehouse district, with a table and a drink right there if the stories have earned one.
