Temple Beth Israel
4.5 (23)museum
Southern California’s first standing synagogue, an 1889 Victorian redwood structure preserved in Heritage Park.
Description

Built in the Classic Revival style, the temple held its first service in September 1889 and soon served as temporary quarters for numerous religious sects before they established churches of their own. When the County relocated the building to Heritage Park in 1978, it was cut in half for the move, launching an 11-year fundraising campaign to fund an exact restoration. Beyond its museum status, the well-maintained Victorian landmark is also used as a picturesque wedding venue.
