Tasting Silver Lake, Where Mickey Mouse Got His Start

A guided food walk on Silver Lake's stretch of Sunset Boulevard, with six to eight food stops and the area's film history.

This walk stays in one neighborhood and eats its way through it. The guide waits at the corner of Edgecliffe Drive and Sunset Boulevard, on Sunset Triangle Plaza, holding a yellow umbrella. From there the route follows Sunset Boulevard, lined with palms and looking out toward downtown and the Hollywood sign, with tastings at six to eight places along the way.

Come hungry: the operator says the tastings add up to a standard meal. Its FAQ advises skipping a large breakfast or lunch beforehand. At many stops you sit for 20 to 30 minutes, with water and a restroom.

The booking covers the tastings and bottled water. Alcohol is extra, and so is the guide's tip; the operator says it already tips restaurant staff for the group. One booking takes up to ten travelers.

What Lands on the Plate

The operator does not hand out a list of tastings before the walk; it wants each one to arrive as a surprise. The listing names the ideas it builds around: an Armenian and Mexican crossover, a case for Filipino food, and a look inside Erewhon to see whether the market lives up to its TikTok hype. Travelers' accounts from 2025 and 2026 also mention aguachile and Mashti Malone's, a Persian ice cream shop.

Erewhon divides people. One April 2026 guest wrote that the group could have skipped it, and the operator replied that it would take the feedback into account as it refines the route.

Allergies need to reach the operator before the walk: guides carry no allergy medication, and the operator advises against joining with a severe allergy. The listing says vegetarian and pescatarian diets can be accommodated when noted at booking, with a full refund if they cannot. For vegans, the operator's FAQ answers: probably not.

The Neighborhood Between Bites

The listing promises the backstory along with the food. In the silent era this district was called Edendale, where William Selig opened a film studio in 1909 and Mack Sennett's Keystone comedies arrived in 1912. Walt Disney's studio stood on Hyperion Avenue in Silver Lake from 1926 to 1940, and Mickey Mouse was created there in 1928. A supermarket occupies the site today.

The itinerary sets aside five minutes at the Black Cat, still a working bar and restaurant at Sunset Junction. In February 1967 it was the site of one of the country's first LGBTQ civil rights protests, and in 2023 it became a California Historical Landmark. The route also passes the Music Box Steps, where Laurel and Hardy hauled a piano uphill in their 1932 short The Music Box, without stopping.

How Far You Walk, and Who It Suits

The operator puts the total distance at one to two miles, broken up so that no stretch runs much past half a mile without a stop. Its FAQ suggests sneakers or comfortable sandals. It also says the walk is designed for any weather, with tastings served indoors or under cover; bring a rain jacket or an umbrella.

Strollers work on the route, the operator says, though high chairs are not available at every stop and a small child may need to sit on your lap. On this booking only infants under two are free; a two-year-old needs a paid ticket, even though the operator's own site sets that line at three. Guests with a disability should contact the operator right after booking, and it promises a full refund if it cannot meet the need. The listing also flags the walk as not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries.

Departure Days, Group Size and Holiday Weeks

As of October 17, 2026, the booking calendar shows noon departures Tuesday through Sunday, a second 5:00 PM departure on Fridays and Saturdays, and nothing on Mondays. Online booking closes 24 hours before the start. Cancel at least 24 hours ahead for a full refund; after that, there is none.

Two couples who reviewed the walk in November 2025 and August 2026 turned out to be the only guests that day, which made it a private tour by default. Evenings cool off fast after sunset, the operator notes, and it asks guests on later walks to bring something warm.

Holiday weeks carry a real risk: on one holiday-week walk reviewed in January 2026, half the usual stops were closed and the guide had to improvise. The operator replied that it had confirmed hours in advance, but a couple of small partners, one a food truck with no phone, closed at the last minute.

Getting there: the operator suggests the Metro B Line to Vermont/Santa Monica, then a 22-minute walk along Santa Monica and Sunset Boulevards, or the 4 bus to Sunset/Maltman, which stops across the street from the plaza. It says there are no parking lots near the meeting point, though nearby street spaces are usually unmetered. The walk finishes back at Sunset Triangle Plaza, a few steps from where the yellow umbrella first appeared.
