Taste Cacao Off the Tree, Then Chocolate, Below Mount Kaʻala
A guided walk through a working cacao orchard in Waialua on Oʻahu's North Shore, ending with a tasting of Hawaiʻi-grown chocolate.
Kamananui Cacao Orchards is a working cacao farm in Waialua, on Oʻahu's North Shore, at the base of Mount Kaʻala. It is a partnership between Mānoa Chocolate and Cacao Services, a cacao consultancy based in Hawaiʻi. Mānoa Chocolate founder Dylan Butterbaugh writes that the farm took six years, from two years of scouting to digging a well and laying a road that stays usable in the rain.
The tour follows the crop in order: through the orchard, into a freshly opened pod, then to a long chocolate tasting in the Orchard Pavilion. Wild peacocks, and by the operator's account a pig or two, tend to turn up along the way.

The booking includes an English-speaking guide and the chocolate samples; the guide's tip is extra. Adult tickets cover ages 13 and up and child tickets ages 5 to 12, with at least one adult on every booking. Cancel at least 24 hours ahead for a full refund.

Plan on driving yourself. The operator puts the trip at about an hour from Waikīkī, 45 minutes from Turtle Bay and 50 minutes from Aulani. It also warns that rideshare drivers may not take the gravel road, and one July 2026 review describes arriving by rideshare and finding none to get back out. The turn is off Farrington Highway onto Kuemanu Street, just past Waialua High and Intermediate School, at the farm's red and white sign.
Two gates follow: a keypad, then a call box that rings the staff. The codes come with the booking, but the listing and the operator's own booking notes print different call-box numbers, and an August 2026 review found no keypad on the way out. If the call box doesn't connect, phone the operator at the number in your confirmation. Past the gates come about a mile of dirt and gravel, half a mile of paved road and a last quarter mile of gravel to a free parking lot, with the orchard entrance across from it. The operator asks drivers to stay under 15 mph and not stop for wildlife photos on the road.
Pulp, Raw Beans, Then a Table of Bars

The first photo above shows a cacao tree on another Oʻahu farm, in Waimānalo; the farm shop shelves in the second are at the orchard. The walk is a slow stroll of 30 minutes or more past cacao trees carrying pods at every stage, along with the other plants the farm grows around them. Before any bar comes out, the guide opens pods for a taste of the fresh fruit, with other tropical fruit alongside. One July 2026 review describes tasting the beans raw, fermented and roasted under the trees.
The group then settles into the Orchard Pavilion for what the operator calls an extensive tasting of bars and treats. Visitors' counts run from about 7 to about 10 chocolates, some with fruit, honey or nuts mixed in, served with tea made from the cacao plant. The same review describes the samples as dark chocolate, with milk chocolate also on hand. Bars, gifts and insulated tote bags are for sale afterward.
Closed-Toe Shoes, and Take the Bug Spray
The operator recommends closed-toe shoes and sunscreen, encourages a refillable bottle, and keeps cold water, mosquito spray and umbrellas available on request. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to check in, use the restroom and put on repellent before the walk starts. A February 2026 review found patches of mud in parts of the orchard, and a 2025 review counted five mosquito bites before its writer asked for the spray.
Not Wheelchair Accessible, and the Ground Is Uneven
The tour is not wheelchair accessible, according to both the listing and the operator. The operator adds that the farm is not ADA accessible and that guests need to manage a slow walk of 30 minutes or more on uneven ground. Service animals are allowed, according to the listing. Children under 5 are not allowed on the farm. The listing also says a tour cancelled for bad weather gets a different date or a full refund.
