Take the Wheel Yourself for Four Hours on Roanoke Sound

A self-drive pontoon rental on the sound side of the Outer Banks, inside a marked area you learn before you leave the dock.

Take the wheel for four hours on Roanoke Sound.

Causeway Watersports sits on the Nags Head causeway with its dock facing Roanoke Sound, the protected water behind the barrier islands. The 16-person boat is a Bentley pontoon. It carries a bimini top over roughly the back half, hydraulic steering, GPS navigation and a Bluetooth stereo.

No captain comes with it. A staff member walks you through the boat and the permitted area for about ten minutes, and then the four hours belong to you.

The same boat books in blocks running from two hours up to eight. This listing is the four-hour block on the 16-passenger version, and the 2,240-pound cap covers everyone and everything aboard. A 10-passenger boat sits alongside it, capped at 1,669 pounds.

Booking closes three hours before the departure time, and confirmation comes back immediately.

A Driver's License, a Credit Card, and Eighteen Years

Causeway Watersports cites United States Coast Guard rules for why no hired driver comes with the boat. The person who signs for the boat is the person who steers it.

Renting takes a driver's license and a credit card for the damage deposit, and the company sets its own floor at 18 for the renter. Everyone else aboard can be any age, and a minor needs an adult present to sign the waiver. North Carolina asks for a boating safety course from anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 who operates a motor of 10 horsepower or greater, and a rental agreement naming you as the authorized operator counts as meeting that. So the form you sign at the dock is what clears you to drive. It covers that boat and nothing else. The company points renters toward the state's free course anyway, and the orientation covers the controls and the hull before anyone pulls out.

Jockey's Ridge to the North, a Water Tower to the South

The permitted area runs from a line at the northern tip of Roanoke Island across to Jockey's Ridge State Park, and south to the water tower at Wanchese. Groundings set that boundary, and the company draws it to keep hulls out of water too shallow for them. The state adds a rule of its own inside the area: water within 150 yards north and south of the Washington Baum boat ramp, and 300 yards east of it, is no wake.

Swimming off the boat is allowed. Diving is not, anywhere in the rental area. Anchoring for a swim or a picnic is part of what the rental is for. Two rented boats can anchor within talking distance of each other, though they cannot be tied together.

What the Cooler Can Hold

Beer and wine come aboard. Hard liquor and glass containers do not, and whoever is at the wheel stays sober for the whole rental. Coolers and gear have their own space in the seating.

The bimini top shades roughly the back half of the boat. The front half sits open all day.

  • Fishing and crabbing are allowed, and North Carolina requires a fishing license for anyone 16 or older. The dock does not sell them
  • Tubing behind a rental is not permitted, and the company runs separate tubing charters with its own captains
  • The boat comes back to the Causeway Watersports dock. Tying up anywhere else is ruled out
  • Strollers, infant seats and service animals are all accounted for on the listing

Arrive Thirty Minutes Before the Time You Booked

The booking time is the departure time, and the dock asks you there 30 minutes ahead of it to keep departures on schedule.

A full refund needs the cancellation in at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure. Inside that window a traveler cancellation returns nothing. The operator keeps its own right to call off a departure for bad weather.

Its own advice is to reserve several days out, with more lead time over holidays.

📍 7649 S Virginia Dare Trail, Nags Head. The dock sits on the causeway between Nags Head and Manteo, with Roanoke Sound directly behind the building.

The same team runs the parasail and jet ski side of the operation, and they answer questions about where to eat and what else is worth the drive once you hand the keys back.
