Take Metro-North to White Plains, Then a Helicopter Over Manhattan

A shared sightseeing flight out of a suburban airport north of the city, with the longer option swinging past Lady Liberty.

Fly over Manhattan from Westchester County Airport.

Most New York sightseeing helicopters leave from a pier on the East River or a pad across the Hudson in New Jersey. Wings Air flies out of Westchester County Airport, HPN on a boarding pass, on the Harrison side of the county line. Check-in happens at Atlantic Aviation West, a private-aviation terminal at 67 Tower Road in White Plains.

The easy way up from Manhattan is the train. Wings Air puts the Metro-North express from Grand Central to White Plains at about 35 minutes, with a taxi covering the last 15 to the helicopter base. Driving works too. Parking at the airport is free.

Two lengths are sold, 30 minutes and 45. The gap between them is the whole bottom of the island.

What Thirty Minutes in the Air Covers

The short flight works the middle and upper reaches of Manhattan and the water on either side. Wings Air names Central Park, Yankee Stadium and the East River bridges in its own description, and the itinerary it files adds the United Nations headquarters, Times Square and Madison Square Garden.

The thirty-minute route does not reach Lower Manhattan or the Statue of Liberty. That line is the operator's own, printed in its booking notes. Routes also move with weather, air traffic control and temporary flight restrictions. What you see in what order is the pilot's call on the day.

The Extra Fifteen Minutes Buys the Harbor

The 45-minute flight keeps going south past the Financial District. One World Trade Center, Battery Park, Ellis Island and the Brooklyn Bridge come into the frame, and the turn around Liberty Island is the part most people are paying for.

Lady Liberty appears on the longer route only. Everything the short flight covers stays in, with the harbor added at the far end.

A Shared Cabin With a Four-Passenger Floor

These are shared departures. Wings Air seats you alongside whoever else booked the same slot, and a flight needs four passengers before it will operate. Thinly booked times can move. Private charters exist for couples and for bigger groups, sold as their own products.

Two numbers decide whether you board:

  • Maximum weight is 250 pounds, roughly 113 kilograms, per person, and every flight also carries a combined limit for everyone on board
  • Check-in is 30 minutes before the scheduled lift-off

Weather Sets the Schedule

Flights go when the sky allows. Wings Air's own notes cover weather and maintenance cancellations with either another date or a full refund, and the terms attached to your particular booking sit on the checkout page.

A few more things worth settling in advance:

  • Children under two ride on an adult's lap at no charge
  • Anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian to consent
  • Roundtrip car service between Manhattan and the airport is sold as an add-on
  • The airport fee is charged separately from the flight itself
  • The cabin is wheelchair accessible and service animals are allowed

The pin above marks Grand Central Terminal, where the train ride starts. The helicopter itself lifts off north of the city, from Atlantic Aviation West at 67 Tower Road in White Plains.

Take the latest slot the calendar will give you. The light goes long across the Hudson, Midtown throws its shadow east over the river, and you land back into a parking lot quiet enough to hear the rotors wind down.
