Take Amtrak to Hudson, Then a Taxi Up to Frederic Church's Olana
A painter spent forty years shaping this hill into a frame for the river he had already painted. The house sits on top as the ornament. The carriage roads are how you walk the design, and the grounds cost nothing.
🚆 Warren Street, Then Five Miles South
🛍️ New York's Most Intact 19th-Century Street
Warren Street runs uphill from the Hudson waterfront through a 139-acre historic district listed in 1985, with 756 contributing properties that mostly date from the city's founding in 1785 to the mid-1930s. It is New York's most intact 19th-century main commercial street, and the street signs still carry whales, a nod to the whalers who made Hudson a safe harbor after the Revolution. From the platform at 69 South Front Street it is about a 15-minute walk to the middle of the street.

🎨 What Church Built Before the House
Church bought 126 acres of hardscrabble hillside here in 1860 and spent the next four decades shaping it into a 250-acre work of landscape design, with a working farm, a man-made lake, replanted woodland and more than five miles of carriage roads built around the river view. He worked with Calvert Vaux on the Persian-inspired house the family entered in 1872, and four states show from the ridge. The grounds are free every day from 8 AM to sunset, and the $12 Landscape Walk covers a mile of that design in an hour. The $20 main-floor house tour runs Tuesday to Sunday, 10 to 4, only through November 1, stops November 2 to 15 for exhibition work, and returns weekends November 16 to 30.

🗺️ Order the Day Around the Tour Slot
Olana sits five miles south of Warren Street, and the site lists a car or a taxi, no bus. Taxis are scarce and Uber and Lyft limited, so book the taxi up and the ride back before you leave Hudson. Hudson Region Transport, at 518-697-0056, runs around the clock. Let the tour slot set the order rather than the browsing: on the current timetable the 8:15 from Penn reaches Hudson at 10:23, early enough to go straight up for a booked late-morning tour, with Warren Street left for the walk back to the platform. Sunset lands at 4:41 PM on November 7, and the 8:03 PM train is the last one to Penn. Recheck both for your date.
