Taft Memorial Carillon
4.3 (73)attraction
This marble tower on Capitol Hill chimes across the grounds with 27 French-cast bells, honoring Senator Robert A. Taft.
Description

Designed by architect Douglas W. Orr, the memorial centers on a 10-foot bronze statue of Senator Taft sculpted by Wheeler Williams. At ground level, jets of water flow into a basin circling the 15-foot-high base. Overhead, the belfry houses instruments from the Paccard Bell Foundry in Annecy, France, anchored by a seven-ton bourdon bell. Authorized in 1955, the structure was funded through more than a million dollars raised by popular subscription across every state.
