Sunset on the Hudson, Then Free Friday Night at the Whitney

Minutes before the Whitney's free hours begin, the sun drops behind the Jersey City skyline; the evening starts on the Gansevoort sand and ends upstairs in galleries that stay open until ten.

Start at the river, end at the art.

Gansevoort Peninsula to the Whitney Museum

🌅 Start on the sand while the light drops

The Gansevoort shoreline looks west across open water to New Jersey, so the sun drops behind the far shore rather than the towers. Arrive between 4:15 and 4:30, walk the boardwalk, and let the sky turn: on 6 November the sun sets at 4:47 PM, per the US Naval Observatory, and it is closer to 4:30 by mid-December. Cloud cover decides how much colour you get, so check the Friday forecast before you build an evening around the river. Swimming is not allowed here, and the wind off the water decides how long you stay.

🖼️ Cross West Street and climb

Cross West Street at Gansevoort and you are at the museum door, about a five-minute walk from the sand; allow a few minutes more for the crossing and the bag check. Free Friday admission runs 5 to 10 PM and requires a free timed ticket: capacity is limited, tickets are released up to five weeks ahead, and the museum recommends reserving in advance, so a walk-in is not guaranteed. Galleries and the shop stay open until 10 PM on Fridays.

🗺️ Run the two stops as one evening

Work backwards from the clock: the light goes minutes before the free window opens, so the river slot is short and worth protecting. Check the Friday forecast before you commit to the sand; if it rains, skip the shoreline and go straight in. End on the eighth floor, where Studio Bar stays open until 9 PM on Fridays and the Meatpacking District is lit below.
