Sunset on Presidio Tunnel Tops, Then Tacos Up the Hill

The Outpost playground keeps 9:30 AM to 5 PM hours from November to March, but the lawns, paths and overlooks at Tunnel Tops stay open year-round. In November the sun sets to the southwest, not behind the Golden Gate, so the bridge takes the last side light while the grass holds the afterglow. Be up here around 4:15 PM, then walk ten minutes uphill to a warm table.

Come at 4:15 PM for the afterglow

🌅 Why the Sun Misses the Bridge in November

From the lawn the Golden Gate stands northwest; in November the sun goes down in the southwest, well left of the span and behind the Presidio treeline. That is the real draw — a dusk bridge view, not a sun dropping behind the towers: the steel takes the last side light and warms to amber while the sky over the grass keeps glowing for another half hour. Sunset slides from 5:11 PM on November 1 to 4:51 PM on November 30, and lands at 4:58 PM on the 15th, so be on the lawn about 40 minutes early: 4:15 PM in mid-November. No ticket, and the lawns never close; only the Outpost playground (9:30 AM to 5 PM, November to March), the visitor center and the Field Station keep hours.

🌮 Mole Poblano in the Historic Officers' Club

Ten minutes uphill, Colibri sits inside the historic Presidio Officers' Club at 50 Moraga Avenue, on ground the Spanish army first held in 1776, and the evening works differently depending on which half of the menu you came for. Dinner is the seated, full-menu version from 4 PM — the 3 to 4 PM hour is a short menu — with mole poblano and Michoacán carnitas at $32 each. Happy hour is bar-only, Monday to Friday 3 to 6 PM, except on holidays and whenever the bar is closed: small plates $10, cocktails $12. The heated patio is the best seat and the most contested, so book on Resy, ask for outdoor seating and mention a dog (they cap it at five); turning up and expecting a patio table is not a plan.

🎟️ Free Bridge Views, Ten Minutes to Dinner

Tunnel Tops is free — no gate, no ticket — so the pitch is simple: a bridge view at dusk, then dinner inside a historic officers' club, ten minutes apart on foot. Colibri handles the second half, with tortillas pressed to order behind the bar. Getting here is easy enough: Muni 43 to Presidio Transit Center, or Muni 30 to the Sports Basement lot, with paid parking at both ends that fills as the light goes.
