Sunset at Fan Pier, Then Free Art at Boston's ICA Until Nine
Boston's light leaves around half past four in November, which opens a strange empty hour on the waterfront. Fill it on the pier, then spend the dark part indoors with new art and a glass of wine under a building that glows after sunset.
🗺️ Fan Pier Park to the ICA
🌅 Start where the sun goes down
Fan Pier Park is the lawn and stone promenade at the tip of the pier, free and open around the clock. The winter sun leaves early here — before 4:40 PM on every Thursday in this run — so look up the sunset time for your date and be on the water about twenty minutes before it. Stay for the blue hour, when the sky over the harbor turns and the skyline across the water starts to come on.

🎟️ Ten minutes to free art
From the pier, walk the Harborwalk about 500 meters, ten easy minutes, to the cantilevered glass box of the Institute of Contemporary Art. Admission is free every Thursday 5 to 9 PM through Dec 17, except Nov 26, when the museum closes for Thanksgiving. Free tickets are required and on-site reservations are not guaranteed, so claim yours online before you go. Check-in starts at 5 PM and last entry is 8:30 PM.

🧭 One evening, two stops, no planning
The two stops fill one short winter evening without a car: sunset at the pier, ten minutes of harbor walk, then the galleries and a glass of natural wine at the ICA bar, open until 8:30 PM on Thursdays. Book the free ticket before you leave home and the only thing left to decide is how long you stay. Bring a warm layer and ride the Silver Line from Courthouse to South Station.
