Suit Up on Girard Avenue, Swim Into a Sea Cave

La Jolla Cove reads as an ordinary swimming beach from the road. Water Sports San Diego runs a seventy-five minute guided snorkel that starts in a storefront a short walk up the hill, goes in from the rocks, and carries on to a sea cave you cannot reach on foot.

Suit up on Girard Avenue and swim to a sea cave.

The shop is easy to walk past. It is a suite on Girard Avenue, a short walk up from the water, and the operator's own directions tell you to look for a big sign that says MARKET.

You turn up in street clothes and get your gear on there. Then the group walks down and goes in from the rocks. The tour runs seventy-five minutes, and a guide is in the water for all of it.

Water Sports San Diego is a small outfit. It describes its own crew as an out-going team of seasoned guides who spend their lives around the ocean. Guiding is available in English and in Spanish.

Departures are at 9:30 in the morning, at noon, and at 2:00 in the afternoon. The booking calendar runs six days a week and skips Wednesdays.

The operator asks you to arrive twenty to thirty minutes before your slot. That shop time comes before the seventy-five minutes, so plan the morning around the wider window.

The Cave Is the Part You Cannot Walk To

The cliffs along this stretch are soft sandstone and the surf has cut into them. The operator puts the cave at the centre of its own pitch for this trip: it writes that the group goes into an epic Sea Cave.

There is no trail to the opening and no stairs. From the clifftop you get a view of the water. The cave itself you reach by swimming, which is the whole argument for doing this with gear and a guide.

What Shares the Water With You

The operator calls them water dogs. Its homepage promises seals and sea lions, and the cove is where they haul out on the flat rock shelf at the base of the cliff.

These are wild animals on an open coast, so how close you get is their decision. A curious sea lion will come and take its own look at you, and that is the thing most people book this for.

The same company advertises a separate leopard shark trip on its website, keyed to the late summer. This booking is the cove snorkel.

The Wetsuit Is a Separate Rental

Snorkel equipment comes with the booking. The listing's inclusions line covers use of snorkeling equipment, and that is the whole of it.

The wetsuit is handled at the shop counter, on top of what you pay to reserve. The listing's exclusions line says so in as many words: wetsuit rental available at our shop. A sentence further up the same listing mentions the use of wetsuits, which reads as though it were thrown in. Treat the exclusions line as the one that describes your bill.

This is the open Pacific off Southern California, and keeping you comfortable in it is the operator's own stated reason for having the wetsuits. Snorkellers give a second reason. Karina M wrote in August 2024 that beyond keeping you warm, "it also helps stay afloat."

Who This Swim Is Built For

The listing asks for at least a moderate level of physical fitness. It records the trip as not recommended for pregnant travellers, and not recommended for travellers with poor cardiovascular health.

People who have done it describe something harder. No flotation device comes with the trip, and the route carries on past the cove into open water. Travellers write about a strong current, and about surf big enough to make holding still difficult while a guide is talking. One describes a guide taking a tired swimmer back to shore partway through. Treat confidence in open water as the real requirement here.

  • One reservation takes up to eight travellers. The listing gives no figure for the departure itself, so treat the eight as the cap on your booking.
  • Child, youth, adult and senior all price the same, and the form does not require an adult on the reservation.
  • Booking closes two hours before the start time, and confirmation is immediate.
  • Cancel at least twenty-four hours ahead for a full refund.
  • For groups over six the operator says on its homepage that calling may be easier.

A mobile ticket is accepted, one per booking.

🧭 The shop sits at 8008 Girard Avenue, Suite 190, in La Jolla village. The sign to look for says MARKET, and the listing notes public transport running nearby.

Take the 9:30 and you are back on Girard before lunch with salt still in your hair and the whole afternoon in front of you.
